O.o DVD is outdated? Seriously? Thaths the first time ive heard that. VHS, CD-ROMS, Tape decks are out dated. DVD's havent hit that stage yet.
Adding in my lulz at this comment. You are delusional if you think DVD is outdated. As awesome as Bluray is, DVD isn't outdated.
Also technically Bluray is a type of DVD. It just uses a blue laser instead of red laser and the data imprints on the aluminum backing are smaller. But other than that the technology is the same as DVD.
High definition video on Bluray discs has nothing to do with the disc itself the disc just provides more storage space to make larger movies possible.
Well that settles it, better destroy my DVDs of Casablanca and The Searchers, because Blu Ray will provide such a quantum leap in quality for those flicks right?
I can see DVD's being outdated for storage uses in accordance with games. FFXIII is probably going to be like 9 DVD's for Xbox.

Was watching my Star Trek collection the other day, and when a scene wasn't shot too well, it was made damn obvious by the extra clarity, so it's a bit of a double-edged sword.
Part of it has to do with the distance you sit from the TV also. With the way my parents have the living room set up, there'd be no point to upgrade to BluRay unless they replaced their current TV with a 50" just so you could see the extra damn detail from the couch.
There's another difference between the upgrade from DVD to BluRay and the upgrade from VHS to Laserdisc: A BluRay player is backwards compatible to a DVD player which is backwards compatible to a VCD player.
Laserdisc was some kind of stand-alone dead-end (random tidbit: did you know that laserdisc was analog?). People couldn't buy a Laserdisc player and pop in their old video tapes. So you had to buy two devices, because not everything was released on Laserdisc and additionally, you couldn't record a LD.
People might get a BluRay player instead of a DVD player in a few months when players get cheap. Like people got DVD drives for their computers when the mainstream medium was still CD-ROM.

Well, regardless of whether a Blu-Ray player is backwards compatible or not - it doesn't make DVD outdated. If anything, DVD has become the new CD-ROM and will stay that way for a long time.

I know that Bluray has a much better chance of survival than laserdisc I know that it is backwards compatible which will help once bluray players are cheap enough that people get those instead of regular dvd players. At the moment the majority of bluray demographic is enthusiasts and gamers.

The technology that you are talking about, the hard coating is NOT part of bluray technology. It has nothing to do with how the information is written to the disc or how the information is read off the disc. It was a necessity to develop because bluray is more susceptible to damaging scratches than regular DVD's but it is not attached to the bluray technology they could use the hard coating on DVD's if they wanted.
Increased storage and video quality is nice and all but when is Sony goign to fix it's bloated software?
When I wanna watch a movie, I turn on my player, take a piss and grab a drink. By that time the tray will finally open for me to put in the movie. Then I go wash my car, read a short novel, and file my income taxes in the time it takes for the movie to load.
Granted, my player is two years old now. I guess it is time for me to finally pull the trigger on a PS3.
Yeah, PS3 does take a few seconds between where you hit the eject button and when the disk actualy ejects. Mabey 3 seconds or so. In that regard it could be faster. It could also be much much worse.
I know the ones you are talking about though. it does suck hehe. I wonder why the ps3 even takes 3 seconds to eject the game/dvd/br. I cant really explain why that is.

DVD as a storage format is outdated. Blu-Ray as a storage format is outdated. There's always another faster, more efficient piece of technology even if it's pricier. Eventually, we'll have progressed past our shitty land-lines and terrible excuse for telcom infrastructure that we're just streaming everything, or buying SSD chips, and when that happens, moore's law has already kicked it's ass.

All it says is that the hard coating is necessary for BD and not for DVD. Again BD exists WITHOUT the hard coating the first generation BD were encased in plastic cases like the UMD discs to protect them. The hard coating was developed later to make the discs cheaper to develop.
