I took this with a grain of salt, seeing as how it is IGN. But, some of the points mentioned were actually good.

tl;dr
Here is the magical recipe.
1. Make them just like FFXII.
It'll fall on deaf ears, but its a nice gesture. I'd rather see cardboard faces with text or voice on them (with changing faces for expressions) than Moira Brown's soulless eyes peering through me when I visit her shop in Megaton, though. Have people look in different directions once in awhile if you're going to have full-motion characters and townsfolk.
Why is it assumed that because I play a game I want to play it online with a bunch of damn 12 year olds who only want to dick around and fuck things up for the next 3 years till their balls finally drop and they realize they're being fuckwads.
Offline only play is fine and dandy with me.
Point 9 is right on the money though.
I laughed when I read this... I mean, this coming from IGN, who are notorious for bashing JRPGs left and right.Top 10 Ways to Fix JRPGs
How to save the genre we love so much.
Good list, though. I don't understand why modern JRPGs use save points, they were used originally because of hardware limitations.
I like the save points. To get rid of them would suck. I side with a few things he said, however the fear of losing your work is not one I side with at all. Just because you grew up and have run low on time does not mean the younger people cant see it like we did.
We get our fill of new style having some old style is just fine, as long as it does change a little....
We have a thread discussing the current situation of JRPGs ON THE FRONT PAGE! Like we really need another thread, now fueled IGN's BRILLIANCE.
Also, I must repeat this:
Warning: Once the phrase "RPG" enters the equation all intelligence is abandoned
Eliminate JRPGS completely. Nothing of value will be lost.
I'd like to see an RPG have a really fucked up twist that's so off the wall, well be talking about it for years. Like have the main character (who's usually the highest level by the end of a game) become the final boss in a near impossible epic fight because you spent so much time building him up and giving him the best gear and all those permanent +stat items. (I know I'm not the only one guilty of this)
Megaten Series would be the fucking epitome of that...and they didn't even mention it.
Western RPGs seem more like shitty sandbox adventure games. If I play an RPG, I expect to be entertained, like reading a good book. If I want strong gameplay, I'm going to pick up a faster-paced genre, because RPG gameplay, eastern or western, has never been particularly fun or challenging. Really... why take RPG "gameplay" seriously? Fallout 3 was boring as shit: run around and entertain yourself because the devs certainly aren't going to entertain you or make you give a shit about the "story". Didn't even finish FF12 because I just didn't care what was going on at all, and had no motivation to progress through yet another dungeon of watching my characters fight for 3 hours, killing the joke of a boss, then seeing a 5 minute cutscene about politics. Bring back the PS1 era, please.
This person clearly like Western RPGs more than jRPGs. Possibly because they seem fresh since they haven't been around as long. Maybe 5 years from now after they're tired of playing Fallout 6 they'll come up with 10 ways to fix Western RPGs
While I don't agree with with the entire article they do make some pretty valid points.
1. Cliche characters are cliche. Theres either a lone swordsman/jack of all trades dude or its an annoying emo-fag as the protagonist. Healer that is way too kind to be considered normal. Big annoying dude that you put up with. Young kid that is just as annoying but their cuteness makes up for it. Big breasted chick that flirts with main character. Oh also, there may or may not be a pet involved. Did I get the whole cast?
2. Story is cookie cutter. You've seen it many times over in almost every jRPG. Its the same shit chopped up and reused.
3. English voice actors that don't suck.
These are the three points I agree with.
lol @ #9 bitching about long final dungeons. I kind of like that. Nothing like the grind you had to do to get to Luther in SO3 or the Northern Crater in FFVII (listening to Judgement Day in the background). Kefka's Castle... no words need to be spoken.
Enjoy the nostalgia:

10.) People Live Here?
I will agree that quite a few of the JRPGs I've played lack the element of real "life" in their cities but honestly... do I care? Seriously, do I care if the milkman is trying to bang the blacksmiths daughter so he cooks up this plan to feed her some enchanted mushrooms and date rape her but sadly he fails to procure the mushrooms because he required more vespene gas? There's no doubt that NPCs living their lives gives the player a real feel for the world and while it enhances the experience of a good game but a good RPG usual makes me give two shits about what John the Pedophile is doing at the elementary school.
9.) The Only Good Filler is Jelly in Donuts
Filler content is like salt, you put too much and your game becomes unbearable and if you put too little the experience is bland. It's about finding balance. (Seriously, what fun would it be to fight the bosses without going through a dungeon or two? You just walk into a market and WHOA there he is buying arugula and spinach, better frag his ass!)
8.) Invest in Presentation
Chat boxes are vintage! I loves me sum animation and some of the shit they're coming out with today can blow your mind! However I also love playing games because they retain some of those old qualities.
7.) The Road Less Traveled
Open worlds are great, I won't lie, I love wandering and exploring. But one of the problems I know I have with open worlds is the feeling of "aimlessness" when objectives are either vague or you've went on break and forgotten just what the hell you were doing.
6.) Cliches are for Chumps
Agreed
5.) Voice Acting Approaches
I'm glad more localizations have the Japanese audio option now. As for the silly voices, its the choice between authenticity and adaption, a very thorny path.
4.) I Feel So Alone
Options certainly are nice but I certainly enjoy playing RPG games by myself.
3.) No More Save Points
Agreed^infinity
2.) Write a New Story, Mkay?
Agreed but sometimes I like playing through generic games because they're fun. I'd just like an increase in variety!
1.) Battle Systems: Kick It Up a Notch (BAM!)
If I had a choice between an awesome battle system (Bracing for constant impact) or an awesome story line (Literally an ocean of tears flowing from my eyes), I'd choose the awesome story. I agree that an innovative battle system is kick ass but come on, it's ranked number one?
tl;dr
I've got far too much time on my hands.
Some good points, but no to the multiplayer aspect coming to RPGs, I play them alone to enjoy the story. Also the guy apparently writing the article has a hardon for Fallout and Oblivion, which imo were both boring as shit. Sure they had a lot to do, but...there was no point in doing it, you didnt feel compelled to do anything.
ITT: Journalism and IGN, lol.
