To all the bleeding hearts: Most experts agree that Charity, and Altruism in general evolved as a means to advertise your prosperity in order to attract a mate. Humans never lost this trait after we developed advanced reasoning and communication skills, so now we have to listen to people bitch on the internet trying to sound self-righteous, thinking- hoping that someone who hears them actually gives a shit and might think better of them for it. Sorry to break it to you, but apathy is the default here. Get off your soapbox.

Ever see that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry gets audited by the IRS because he donated to some bogus charity (that Kramer mentioned in front of Jerry and Elaine) for a poor country struck by a natural disaster because he was trying to impress Elaine (who he was dating at the time?)

    Case closed.

You just parrot what wikipedia says without checking if the source is legit? Get the fuck out of here, twit. If you can't point out the specific part where it says it, and the source that backs it up, then you don't know what you're talking about.

Something really needs to be done about the idiots who go about nitpicking scientific concepts they have no basic understanding of so they can go on and justify their stupid beliefs. Not that it requires even mentioning, especially for people who have no understanding of the cause/effect relationship.

I don't understand how "How about [topic]?" is asking any kind of question that can be answered. I'm not even sure it is an actual question.

    "When white potato truffle?"

More to your supposed point, that didn't make the news because no one died and there was very little, if any, major structural damage. If it wasn't for the loss of power and electricity until 6am, I would be questioning why anyone outside of the area affected would care. National news' job is not to report the minute and mundane happenings of every american or global locale.

Maybe i'm just a bit jaded (humbled, perhaps) by the Haitian earthquake. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seriously thought the words "Seriously? You lost power until 6am?! People died in Haiti. You should be ashamed of yourself."

I dont see how you can possibly misconstrue that guys words. Anyone who is against helping those in dire need is wrong. Anyone actively looking for ways to slam those who try to help those in dire need is wrong.

It has nothing to do with politics. This is the same guy who was praising bush's responce to the tsunami in SE Asia. And now he is criticizing a democratic president who is trying to assist a diferant nation who was struck with a national disaster.

If republicans were smart, they would distance themselves from Rush. It would only benefit them.

Actually, there have been a couple studies that have shown pretty blatantly that IQ and Religiosity tend to be inversely proportionate. Which is to say that you are more likely to find Atheists/Agnostics among more intelligent people. I would daresay that Education would return a similar result.

There are plenty of exceptions, of course, but I believe these to be mostly the result of a 3rd and more important variable: Indoctrination. If they get it into you young and then bring you up in a religion-intensive environment (church community, mormons, etc), of course it would take an enormous force of will to break free.
as someone that isn't a "traditional" christian, and wasn't brought up in a strict religious upbringing, (my beliefs stem from my own thoughts on life) I would argue those studies are bullshit. Who performed them? How were they done? There's a well known theory that's gaining momentum in the scientific community, to the point it's being taught in colleges, that there are many classifications of intelligence in each person, ( logical, linguistic, spatial, et al.) Being intelligent at one area, (say, spatial intelligence) doesn't necessarily imply strong intelligence all across the board. In fact, people aren't proficient in all areas. I have an I.Q. rated as "superior" or in the upper 20%, and yet i can't find my way around places worth shit. I find it hard to believe religion and intelligence have any correlation at all.

Others have already said gtfo in better ways than i could, yet i have to wonder why you picked out my little attempt to cool vajra down after eight pages that's dedicated to Haiti(yeah yeah i know inferior board settings). I'm guessing a little bias?

Anyways, back on topic, the wall street journal has a pretty potent article about Haiti right now. I really recommend going to wsj.com and reading up on it. It's pretty sad. People alive under rubble and people just walking by not able to do anything, corpses littering the streets. Makes you wonder why we didn't respond sooner.

You sure do make a lot of assumptions for someone trying to claim the intellectual high ground. I never said that Wiki is where I learned this material. The fact is, most of what I know on the subject is from "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins, which still holds it's ground to this day despite being over 30 years old. Parts of my ideas were extrapolations that I made myself from the same material. It just so happens that nearly every other source I've happened upon agrees with it, including the Wiki. I get the feeling that if I cited an entire book as my source, you would make some other remark about how I wasn't being specific enough or something. If I go through and quote every passage relevant to my case, you would undoubtedly accuse me of being selective and taking it out of context (cherry-picking) etc etc.

The fact of the matter is, I made my rebuttal to your challenge of my initial remarks, and rather than attack my ideas, you attacked me. In the debating world, this is referred to as Ad Hominem, and is generally considered an admission of defeat, as you obviously don't have confidence in your stance if you resort to attacking your opponent. I'll gladly overlook it if you want to continue the discussion, but I must insist on a Quid pro quo. It's your turn to lay down some evidence to the contrary. I'm not gonna do all the work if it ends up that you're just trolling. Try to convince me.

    @Guitarman

I read the entire thread in one sitting before making my initial post and yours was the first one that really caught my eye. I may have even stopped reading if I hadn't seen it, but it happened to pique my interest. It's a subject that I've looked at from time to time and discussed with people in conversations about religion. The rest of my post was more of an afterthought really, but it seems to have hit some sensitive spots. My initial source for my claims on the Religiosity correlation on Intelligence were (by pure coincidence) another book my Richard Dawkins called "The God Delusion". Obviously, the book had an agenda, but Dawkins cited his own sources very meticulously. I don't have the book on hand right now but, if you don't mind another Wiki link, I did find a similar entry (possibly the same one referred in the book).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelli...nd_religiosity

Listed among a few others is a study on Mormons that indicates that their involvement with the church was Directly proportional to their Education level rather than Inversely as I had predicted. I think this is the point on which I would choose to play my "Indoctrination" card mentioned earlier. I know that in a Mormon community, their daily lives are very much intertwined with their church.

Despite linking to a correct definition of ad hominem you don't seem to actually grasp what it is, because that certainly wasn't one. He questioned the credibility of your sources. To clarify and give an example, albeit a simple one:
    "Sylvrdragon's argument"
rebuttal: Sylvrdragon doesn't even have 1000 posts so he's wrong.
Like I said, it's simple and obvious, but should help.

if you do the math it's more like 77 cents, which is preposterous.
