It's likely that by the end of this week celebs will be jumping in the spotlight appealing for help just to attention whore more, nothing else.

It's less than half of an island in the caribbean.

It's hot.

It's humid.

It rains a lot.

And anger is a natural response to having an already miserably bad life made worse by having everyone out in the streets sleeping next to corpses and robbing each other blind to have enough to eat. You can't expect desperation to become calm joy on the news that there is someone at the airport that may help them before they die.

Define vibe. That the majority of the people posting in this thread seem like they don't care? Its BG, surely you're not surprised by people's reactions. Now if this earthquake focused more on all the dogs and cats that died during the earthquake, you'd see an entirely different side of things.

Because giving countries some money doesn't change the root of why some countries are developed and others are not. Its the old proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Obviously it is more complicated than that, but the idea some people have that third world countries just don't work hard enough is just crazy.

Actually, there have been a couple studies that have shown pretty blatantly that IQ and Religiosity tend to be inversely proportionate. Which is to say that you are more likely to find Atheists/Agnostics among more intelligent people. I would daresay that Education would return a similar result.

There are plenty of exceptions, of course, but I believe these to be mostly the result of a 3rd and more important variable: Indoctrination. If they get it into you young and then bring you up in a religion-intensive environment (church community, mormons, etc), of course it would take an enormous force of will to break free.


To all the bleeding hearts: Most experts agree that Charity, and Altruism in general evolved as a means to advertise your prosperity in order to attract a mate. Humans never lost this trait after we developed advanced reasoning and communication skills, so now we have to listen to people bitch on the internet trying to sound self-righteous, thinking- hoping that someone who hears them actually gives a shit and might think better of them for it. Sorry to break it to you, but apathy is the default here. Get off your soapbox.

The truth of the matter is, there are about 7 billion people (and rising exponentially) on this world right now, and we're running out of shit to support them with. I don't know when it will happen, but sometime soon, relative to human history, people are going to feel the effects hard. When it's your kids starving, lets see if you give a fuck about what's happening in another country, or another state, or another city, or another neighborhood.

Be glad that you're in America (if you are, that is) and that it might not hit you quite as fast, and maybe not as hard. I, for one, am happy to see the human population cut back just a little bit with each "disaster". Maybe if the inevitable famines and wars that will come as a result of international resource shortages are delayed just a bit longer, we can educate the population to the approaching problem and maybe soften the blow.

Rush Limbaugh is not backing down from his claim that President Barack Obama is trying to score political points off the earthquake in Haiti.
Challenged by a caller during his show Thursday, Limbaugh said: “If I said it, I meant to say it, and I do believe that everything is political to this president.”

“Everything this president sees is a political opportunity, including Haiti, and he will use it to burnish his credentials with minorities in this country and around the world, and to accuse Republicans of having no compassion,” Limbaugh said in comments flagged by the liberal blog Think Progress.

Limbaugh has come under fire from both the right and the left for saying that the earthquake played directly into Obama’s hands, allowing him to look “compassionate.” The host claimed the White House’s response would bolster Obama’s standing in the “light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country.”

He also appeared to discourage help for the island nation, saying, “We've already donated to Haiti. It’s called the U.S. income tax.”

Critics have characterized Limbaugh’s comments as insensitive and tone-deaf at a time when heartbreaking images of the devastation dominate news coverage.

Confronted with some of that criticism, Limbaugh slammed a caller as “close-minded.”

Have to appreciate how shitty many NGOs are in general with organizing beyond their immediate base of operations(the airport) after shit like this. In Greg Mortenson's (guy who builds girl's schools in Afghan/Pakistan) new book he talks alot about the aftermath of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake and how little made it to remote areas of Kashmir. And even then how much of what they got was unnecessary shit, i.e. he gives an anecdote of them using all the Northface and Patagonia coats and winterwear that got sent to them as firewood and fuel because that was all they had available to them. And beyond immediate aftermath of natural disasters the picture he paints of how the UN and many NGOs operate in this same manner in Afghanistan wherein they don't leave Kabul, it would not inspire much confidence in me if I were in Port Au Prince right now.
