There are many reasons. The searching algorithm it uses allows it to sort things in the most logical order for your terms (if you don't remember internet searches before alta-vista existed, you probably don't remember how much of a horror show it was at times)
This article highlights the spelling intuition of Google:

Hm, so does that advantage extend to other language versions of Google? There's no such thing as "spelling" in Chinese.
Who says that the chinese are searching for everything in Chinese?
I'm also pretty sure that it is included in the algorithm to check for hits of words with one or two different characters, because it also does the spelling corrections in Polish and French and Dutch for certain...
Not talking about whether people in China search in whatever language, just using Chinese as an example.
I do searches in Japanese sometimes, and I do it in Google for 1. it's a habit and 2. I don't even know whether there's a better search engine in Japan. I was just curious whether Google has developed similar technology for those languages. Japanese has no real "spelling" problems either because of the input method being so smart with suggestions and autocompletion.
My impression was that most Japanese use Yahoo, surprisingly.
And what you're doing here is overplaying the tired East vs. West hive-mind/invidualist argument. All that achieves is marginalization of those in China who are concerned with similar human rights standards as many outsiders are, and glosses over the structural reasons why other Chinese may not "give a fuck" (which could be indoctrination or coordinated ignorance).
What you say is not entirely true, since a lot of collectivist societies such as India and Japan and eventually China (when/if it opens up) have gotten a raise in individualist mindsets such as human rights when Western Societies educated them with it through universities. Most, if not all of the reformists in those countries were highly educated people compared to the rest of the populace and learned about these notions through school and then educated others about it, not the other way around. While I do agree that human rights are very important, the Western societies sure as hell shouldn't force them onto foreign countries solely because they think it's the right thing to do.
I live in Japan and have 15 Japanese working for me. They all use Yahoo at lunchtime and said they use it at home as their preferred search engine. Said they don't like the plain look of google and like having news, sports, etc. available on their home page.
Take it for what it's worth I guess.
I prefer google for the opposite reasons. Yahoo/MSN/whatever annoy me in that the page is filled with stuff I simply don't care about.
Overplaying it? I thought I was just saying how it is. You say I attempt to marginalize the more individualistic of the Chinese, I say your very usage of the word "hive-mind" identifies you as ignorant and naive, considering collectivism as the "lesser" social/cultural structure.
i think the west has been indoctrinated with individualism tbh
dude anyone can hack google, it is so easy. Just drink some jolt cola and watch hackers. That Easy.
Google actually keeps a scary amount of data about their users. There's a lot you can learn about a person from their engine searches for the past couple years.
I sure does.
Google for Overlord 2010.
Time for nations to hire crackers to protect there networks. Our generation is nothing but 0's and 1's and when the market really crashes because of a cracker, then we'll the shit that happens. This attempt on google will get swept underneath the rug because of Haiti, not sure why though because no one gave a frick about Haiti before hand. Lol.
