DSL Woes.... verizon wants to send tech.

So, when I moved to my new place I got a cheap DSL package to hold me over for awhile.

It had a max of 3mps download, I recently upgraded to thier "turbo package" which is 7mps/down---3mps/upload speeds. The service was finally ready yesterday, and i'm only getting speeds upto 3mps/down---0.5mps/upload.

Verizon actually called me today about this issue, and said they checked the speeds and want to send a tech out to take a look at my lines. Now before I open up my house to a random guy between the hours of 8am-5pm (lol) I figured I would ask if there was anything I could do on my end to fix this issue, without having a tech have to run out here.

Thanks for any advice in advanced.

*edit* I already power cycled my modem a few times, with same result.

Usually it is really a problem on their end, im a tech guy myself, but ive had to call a guy out to the house each time ive moved.

The guy at your house communicates back with the guys at the ISP and they can tweak a few seetings to give you the best rates.

The one thing you can do (maybe) is to fiddle with your phone lines. Depending on your level of braveness and know how.

    A) The most basic thing is to make sure you have filters on everyone phone line thats not used.
    B) A lot phone lines in the house (depending on the age, etc) are ran off of each other, meaning there all connected and dont have their own line back out to the box. So one thing you can do is make sure your modem is hooked up to its own line. Youll still need to filter the other lines.
    C) The best solution is to filter directly at the source. Youll need to pick up a DSL Split Filter to do this though, and youll have to figure out your phoneline setup at the box. The lines you use for phones youll attach to the filter at the box (you wont need to use filters at every phone jack now), and the non filtered line to your modem.

When the tech guy comes out, suggest he doesn option C, it should be free (at least with the Bells), and it's fairly painless.

That will really only cause less static/hiccups to occur. You really want to do option C, or at the least B, as those will actually help your speed. Check with the tech guy first to see what options you can do within your house.

I kinda doubt it's your connection or their end. Not 100% sure, but usually when it comes down to DSL, it depends on how close you are to their DSLAM box. So, it's very possible you're not even capable of getting those speeds on that connection. It can also be the quality of the connection in between the box and your place as well.

When I used to have Verizon DSL, it was capping at 3.0 mbps downstream, although I subscribed for the higher 5.0mbps package. I wasn't able to take advantage of the speed because I was too far from their dslam box. I had the tools to test this myself, so when I did, I called back Verizon and had them downgrade my package for the time being and they didn't have much a problem refunding the difference in charges for the higher tier connection. I've already switched over to TWC 20mbps for now, at least until FIOS is available in my area.

    Good luck!

Thats what phone support was saying........ but sending out a tech to check out my line anyways.

Sadly, fios is never coming to my area......... boston has a contract with comcast to supply all the city buildings with comcast IT/phones, and in return comcast gets to cockblock verizon from bringing fios to town.

I had this problem long ago. Turns out it was problem on their end, I needed to be on the frame relay system, instead of the system I was currently on, to get higher speeds. I called them many times about this issue too, and they always said it was me. One time I finaly got someone with some knowledge, and he set things right, and bam I had max speeds. Got FIOS now though ^^

so verizon tech is outside right now, I told him about the dsl splitter and he agreed it was probably my best solution.

Head to my basement to check out the wiring....... and I guess my phone line is a "wiring nightmare", and now waiting for a 2nd tech to arrive.

Looks like they might have to run a brand new line, that will be dedicated to the dsl modem.

    /sigh

The techs are gone, connection is still shit.

They decided the best course of action for me, was to have them install a brand new phone line that is dedicated directly to the DSL modem.he original owner of the house had 5 phone lines, all seperate phone lines.... and whoever has done the work on the house royally screwed up the lines.

The line install wouldn't be free, but wouldn't really get a price until the job was completed...... I declined it, and im guessing its about time to get cable internet.

Verizon DSL sucks balls. My landlord has it and refuses to switch, even though our downstream speed AVERAGES 15k/s. Their solution to fix constant disconnects during bad weather was to actually lower our bandwidth even more.

When I get my new place I'm switching to cable internet. FGSFDS.

This, we've had a verizon 2mb connection for multiple years and it SUCKS BALLS. Not to mention they were charging us for a 20mb connection and as of yet have still refused to refund us.
