The "upgrade" route, as opposed to a full reinstall, is actually pretty stream-lined. You slip in the disc while you're on your computer and choose to upgrade and it begins the process and after about 2 hours with any luck you'll be running Windows 7 with all your programs and files intact. As long as it went intended you shouldn't need to reinstall anything unless a program just flat-out doesn't work with Windows 7 specifically, but the purpose of an upgrade is so you don't have to do go through the hassle of backing up and reinstalling anything. Also, if something goes wrong it will simply roll-back and revert to Vista so you're safe there.
Most will likely say to do a full reinstall for the sake of performance and cleanliness, but an upgrade is fine, too. I just did it myself for a family computer so as to avoid reinstalling every PopCap game known to man and it was a very straightforward.
