If they have to tell you they were being sarcastic, they weren't actually and now they're trying to safe face. In rare cases it's just because they're exceptionally bad writers who don't know what sarcasm actually is and shouldn't be trying to write it in the first place.

Sarcasm, while difficult in text-based messages, is not impossible to convey. I've always felt that being able to detect it on message boards is part of the welcome 2 interwebs learning curve, and being able to use it in text-based messages is just an expression of talent in being sarcastic.

I think you raised an interesting point. But, i think the article also raised an interesting point.

The company said it created the punctuation to ensure “equal rights for sarcasm.” Statements, declarations, questions — they all have punctuation. Up until now, sarcasm had nothing, they explain.

The key here is to realize what punctuation actualy does. Punctuation allows the writer to convey, to the reader, what is meant by an expression. Do they want to state a fact/opinion, making some sort of inquiry, or are they making some sort of announcement? I think that sarcasm is both an independant and interdependant expression. It currently relies on the traditional three punctuaion marks, but it does not fall into any of the traditional catagories. Sarcasm lives within all three worlds.

We have punctuation for statements (.), declarations (!), and questions (?). However, can the arguement be made that sarcasm is as destinct as the other three catagories? Now, in the situation where you write an entire parapraph, or more, it is very easy to let the reader know you are being sarcastic. In fact, i do not know how this punctuation would fit into sarcasm that takes the form of a paragraph, or even an essay. Would you need to place this at the end of every sarcastic statement in an essay? While talking about a sarcastic essay, this would pop up everywhere. This arguement is completely thrown out the window when you consider one sentance replies to a discussion.

In a one sentence reply, there is very little context for the reader to identify sarcasm with. In this case, this punctuation is needed more than others.


Furthermore, how would you do that when sarcasm can be conveyed with any of the three punctuations... and these people wish to use a single punctuation mark for all instances. It is perfectly fine to replace a period with this mark, but what would you do for declarations and questions? Would proper use of this be to add this before/after the punctuation that indicates whether the expression is a declaration, or question? Then you would need to have multiple punctuation marks at the end of such expressions (one to indicate it is a question, another to indicate it is sarcasm).

It seems, to me, that you would need three punctuations to accurately identify all sarcastic statements. To eliminate the confusion, I would say they to look rather similar to each other while incorporating the original punctuation mark that they are modifying. Think of the logo, in the OP, but with a (!) and a (?) in addition to the (.). Now you can accurately portray all forms of sarcasm.

Do any punctuation marks convey their meaning well? The only reason we get "excitement" out of "!" or "question" out of "?" is because we've all agreed to use those symbols for those purposes.

It's funny how some people grasp it and others can't. There are some people I am always sarcastic towards and they just can't ever catch on.
