Plan B question

Alright, never had a condom break on me before tonight so a) it was a little scary, and b) just want to make sure we did everything right. Thing broke about two hours ago, we went out and got plan B 40-50 minutes after it happened. Just want to know what people's experiences have been with either plan B or condoms breaking. She isn't worried at all about getting pregnant, and I guess I'm not either but it still gave me a good scare. She's due for her period soon so we'll know later this week.

Yeah, you aught to be fine pregnancy wise. The Plan B morning-after pill is pretty effective up to 48 hours after intercourse. From what I understand, it just dumps a fuckload of progesterone into the woman's system and creates an inhospitable environment for sperm to live, an egg to be fertilized and attach to the uterus' wall.

Now with the condom breaking there is a risk of STI transmission. It might be wise for the two of you to get tested (including blood tests for HIV, Hepatitis, etc), especially if it's been a while and a few partners since the last time you were tested.

A last note, but Plan B will kind of fuck with a lady's system so she might be a little out of it for the next few days.

Something else to consider. Given that, all figures are 'on average' and individuals may be different, a woman only ovulates for about 48 hours, and sperm only live up to a maximum of 72 hours (though over 48hrs virtually none are left alive), there's actually a very small window within a woman's cycle where she can become pregnant. From the time after her period ends to about a day before ovulation, the vagina and uterus aren't in a state to keep sperm alive for long, but it is still habitable. During ovulation, everything's working as intended and it's prime conception conditions; in these vaginal conditions sperm can remain viable to that 72 hour max. After ovulation, the vagina becomes inhospitable to sperm again and, even though an egg has descended during ovulation, conception during the post-ovulation but pre-menstural phase is unlikely because the secretions in the vagina won't create conditions that allow sperm to be viable.

So, given that the OP says the girl is due for her period in a few days, it's likely that she is probably at least 3 days past the end of ovulating. Therefore, even though the condom broke, there's a pretty slim chance that conception could have occurred. Between the end of ovulation and mensturation is a "safe zone" where there's about a 1% chance of conception. Between the end of menstruation and the beginning of ovulation it's a bit dicier as conditions permit longer viability in sperm so when ovulation hits, some might still be alive and kicking to fertilize, even though it's been days since intercourse.

I speak from some experience with an ex of mine where we did this fertility awareness thing for over a year, having unprotected sex, no chemical birth control, and only using barrier methods during possible fertile days. It worked just fine, though a crazy stressful event caused her to stop charting and, oops, she got pregnant because she didn't keep it up the required observations properly and didn't tell me when we next had sex. But, I've got friends who have been doing this going on 3 years without a single scare and it works pretty damn well, without all the drawbacks of hormonal birth control.

You should be fine, but Plan B is not something you want to use often. The side effects are fucking horrible, and it can do some pretty crazy things to your lady friend's body, so try to be careful next time!

As for condoms breaking really, just...

Check the expiration date, yes they do have them. Just because you just bought them don't mean they are new, and although it's rare, its a common cause of breaking.

Make sure you're leaving enough room at the tip of the condom, and make sure she's good and ready before you start doing it (although I doubt this is the problem ) as vaginal dryness can cause breaking as well.

In most cases that I've seen, broken condoms are from old condoms, leaving them in your wallet (I thought people knew not to do this anymore, it's 2010), and not enough lube.

Or if you leave air bubbles at the tip of the condom. Smooth that shit out! (Seriously, I've actually had to tell girls I've been with about this...air bubbles = discomfort + higher risk of breaking)

That shit is there for when you blow your load, but who seriously leaves a condom on when you blow your load, dot them eyes.
