    Computer Nuked by a Virus

I don't know how else to describe this, so bare with me. This literally just happened when I got back from work.

My desktop got completely removed, and it says something about my system being infected. I try to open my taskmgr, but it refuses to open it, saying "its been disabled by an administrator".

No idea how the fuck I could have gotten this virus, but I've no idea how to fix it. I'm thinking about taking my computer to BestBuy tomorrow to see what they can do, but I'm pretty much fucked.

I can still run Final Fantasy, but this shit is incredibly annoying.

Keep getting constant warnings saying that my computer is infected, and it keeps trying to open some software to "scan and remove the virus". Of course, I'm not listening to any of this garbage, considering I'm not that stupid.

Any suggestions as what I can do to get rid of it? Anything aside from reformatting?

EDIT: Apparently it won't let me open Paint so I can post a screenshot.

First thing you need to do is to get into safe mode. Tap F8 when your computer boots and select safe mode from the selection screen that starts up. Then do the steps outlined in the sticky to remove the virus: http://www.bluegartr.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78291

Won't let me run on safe mode. Stared at a black screen for 10 minutes.

You can still run MalwareBytes and ComboFix in normal mode. Also, sometimes Safe mode with networking fails but safe mode without works.

I'd suggest booting into normal XP and then running ComboFix then MBAM. Then a full scan with MBAM if you're bored. Pretty much what the sticky says- you'll probably have to rename ComboFix.ese and mbam.exe to get them to run. Copy them onto a USB stick or CD-R from a second computer if possible.

    In and out in 1hr.

Jesus I can't even get on Facebook? The fuck is this.

EDIT: Gonna try to run ComboFix etc. after I'm done running microsoft security essentials. Called a friend of mine who apparently had the same virus, and he said this fixed it NP. 100 bucks says this won't fix shit.

    Essentials worked.

EDIT: Nevermind, it didn't. I found out the virus however, and google searches lead me to IS2010.exe. I can open up my taskmgr now, which is a HUGE plus. However, the virus is still in my compy.

Won't let you run what on safe mode? The computer won't even boot into safe mode? It can take a while for a machine to boot, even into safe mode. If you get into safe mode and are running combofix it's very common to be staring at it 'doing nothing' for a very long time. You just gotta wait it out.

I did, but still no juice.

I fixed it completely, however, using both Security Essentials and the steps provided in that link. Thanks for the help everyone... shit had me worried D: tried to go to sleep and just ignore it 'til later today, but nope. Shit bothered me too much.

Also as far as safe mode is concerned. I kept trying, then it got to the point where a whole bunch of files would appear on my screen. Computer wouldn't budge past this point.

    Bump.

Now my computer got blue screened. Tried rebooting it 3-4 times this morning before class, and no luck. I'm assuming the virus did some damage, however the virus itself is completely gone from my system, or at least I hope so. Computer was working fine last night after I got rid of the virus... this morning it just decided to give up.

Any error in specific during the BSOD on boot?

Did you disable system restore? Run a scan on any external hard drives? These things can come back rather easily. The inability to get into safe mode and now BSODs mean to me that it's not completely gone. You really need to get into safe mode to make sure you're completely eradicating the infection - run your scans in windows again until you think it's clean, then try safe mode again.

On the other hand, you're fast approaching the point where it might be faster to just back up your data and reformat your computer.

Will post once I get back home.

As far as reformatting, I don't think that's an option. My CD drive stopped working about 2 years ago. Tried fixing it but gave up on it. I could invest in an external CD drive, but I really want to avoid reformatting if its possible.

I'll try getting into safe mode again once I get home.

Gonna take my computer to the tech geeks on my campus. If you couldn't tell, I'm computer illiterate D:. Another friend told me he had this problem, and the people on my campus fixed it for him.

20 bucks says they tell you to reformat, but who knows, being in front of the computer is a lot better than trying to diagnose problems over the web. Good luck getting it fixed up.

Yeah, reformatting is the only way to go supposedly. Took it to a shop, :/. Probably not the smartest move but meh, I don't feel like dealing with this shit.

It's a hassle, but it really is the smartest move. Viruses have a bad habit of reinfecting themselves even with well built removal tools. A format is a guaranteed way to rid yourself of the problem, and with just a small amount of headache to follow while reconfiguring everything.
