    BG Auto: What the ef

Long story short, I ding up some guys car in a parking lot. Was going like 2 mph, nothing major, my fault. Offer to go outside insurance, tell him to get an estimate. He comes back with $1160. I call the repair place he went to, and its actually legit despite my initial WTF.

Obviously, fuck paying that out of pocket so just going through insurance now.. which sucks because now my premium is probably going to go through the roof. Just wondering wtf makes this cost so goddamn much, it looks like I can just bang that shit out with my fist and wipe the paint off and everything would be fine.

    Expert opinion?

If that's a really deep scratch (as it looks like) that shit is not cheap to get taken out. What's your deductible? And how old are you? It may just be cheaper to pay it out of pocket to prevent your premium from going up..

did something similar to that with an old ladys car it was a 2007 carolla anyways someone told me that it has to do with the way the paint it and that there are multiple layers of paint and this is why it costs so much and depending on if its a odd color basically outside of black red white ect you have to match up the paint.... the scratch i caused (well she did she backed up into me but it was somehow my fault) was about 1600 and it looks like less damage than that

and kinda this.... my insurance is going up to 271 a month or something in april with full coverage. not just because of one accident (two and two traffic violations) but yeah you might want to think about paying it out of pocket especially if you have some other crashes recently or tickets

    I'm 24(REVIS BABY WOO ETC).

I paid $1172 this year after JUST dropping down from 1800. No previous accidents/tickets. Don't know how deep the scratch is, but thats mostly paint and theres a dent up top above the wheel if you can see it.

If they can bang out the dent, they'll have to repaint and buff the car. Shit's not cheap. Find it if they quoted a new rear quarterpanel.

Because you have to pay an expert to fix it.

What's probably going to happen: Shop buys whole new back panel to replace the one you dinged up + paint.

What should happen: Hammer + repaint.

And that's why it's so expensive.

For yall's insurance, man, you guys got boned hard. I'm paying ~$70 a month.

Well I'm guessing your deductible is something like $500, assuming I'm right, it's probably cheaper to just pay it out of pocket. Keeping your annual rate low will pay the difference in a year or two.

That estimate sounds on the low side actually. I once scratched the paint on a Lexus SC400, and that was around $1600 to fix. While you technically could bang it out with your fist, the goal is to make it look like it never happened. The spot you hit has no support behind it either which is why the dent is deep, then they have to buff out the paint you left on and color match to the car.

Honestly, don't worry too much about your insurance rates. It'll probably only go up $20-$30 a month and progressively get less over the next 2 years. It's not that bad. Is this your first accident?

The quote was for the hammer job/paint + 4 wheel alignment, which the guy said was necessary.

That's where he took it if it matters. I have no clue what my deductible is, rifling through papers now. And yeah, first incident.

Take it from a perspective from someone who got hit.......

Speaking for myself, if someone hit my brand new subaru and did damage like that (its its not even remotely my fault) I would make sure i'm receiving a a brand new replacement rear fender. Screw someone taking a hammer to it (which will never look the same this way) and having it repainted/clearcoated and pray it doesn't rust some time down the road.

Not to mention, the idea of banging it out..... repainting it, and buffing it out might be damn near close to the estimated cost for a replacement part due to labor fees (dealership is usually around $80/hr) since they have to paint one layer at a time for multiple layer.

    That might depend on state?

My insurance is due to go down alot, because i've "matured" as a driver for having my license for 5 years. Turning 25 does nothing here in MA

    *edit to above*

4 wheel alignment should be least of worriers.......... its like what? $80?

By the way, funny side story. I accidentally gave the guy last years insurance card/info, and was away from the phone when he initially called so didn't pick up. I imagine bricks were shat when the company told him I didnt have insurance with them anymore(switched last year), and then nobody picked up at the number. Felt bad lol, kid was my age/younger.

I don't know where you live, but in NY/NJ they destroy you after one incident and not to the tune of 20-30 bucks a month. Higher risk, etc

Uh, yeah don't expect everyone to accept a hammer + paint work especially if the car is new.

If he did, consider yourself lucky. And yeah, allignment is cheap, around 50~

Hammer it out, primer, paint, buff, labor. The car is black, buffing it is no easy task.
