The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides with the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and good will shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon those with great vengeance and with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know that my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.'

by that logic we should not allow soldiers to carry pocket bibles or wear crosses, which many do.

Except the ACOGs are issued items that the soldier HAS to carry.

Completely the same as optional religious icons a person may choose to hold.

Wow this whole thing is very fascinating. On one hand it probably doesn't matter because the inscriptions are so small and don't really say anything just reference passages. On the other hand they don't need to be there so why not just take them off and not even bother debating it.

It can be used as extra ammo against us even if it isn't the biggest thing or the only thing there is no reason to add to the fire if you don't have to. My attitude towards it is it wouldn't hurt anyone to take the inscriptions off but it could be potentially damaging to have them on there so why not go on the side of caution.

    Deus fucking volt, motherfuckers.

Let's just for once be honest with ourselves. This is not Cowboys and Indians. We're not the cavalry. This is a fucking crusade and if we're going to engage in one let's at least own up to it. And yet even during the Crusades there were moments of cultural acclimation and acceptance towards the Muslims; Saladin was considered to be the flower of chivalry (and he fucking was, man is my hero). But no, we need boogiemen, because otherwise we can't sleep at night.

Honestly I think people are looking at this with a western point of view where knowledge of the Bible is taken as common knowledge and for granted. Those regions would not likely realize that JN8:12 stands for a Bible verse the way we do. As for the extremist we are so worried about it would be basically a sin (in their eyes) to even know that information much less what specifically it was. Then they'd have to be going over our guns with magnifying glasses to see a code like: ACOG4X32JN8:12 to put that forbidden knowledge to use. Most American's I dare say wouldn't even catch that reference and just assume its a serial code and ignore it. If anything the news story itself does far more harm letting them know its there.

I would like to point out that even if the US claims this isn't a holy war, the Iraqis and Muslims do consider this a religious war (wait they don't just listen to us when we say it isn't?! shocker I know! )

So again this makes little to no difference.

That is quite a claim. How did you come to the conclusion that it makes little or no difference? Do you actually know how much of a difference it makes? Or are you deducing it based on what knowledge?

but the argument is that it incites more hatred amongst the muslims. they don't care if it's gov issued or a personal item, if it's there it's there. anything religious should be banned from the military across the board if that is the argument.

I'm not even arguing that it should be taken off. It serves no purpose for it to be there and tbh it's kinda weird for that to be there. If my laptop had an inscription on it that was a reference to norse mythology i'd be like "wtf is this lol" and id rather it not be there. doesnt mean id go flip shit and get pissed over it. being offended at this or thinking it fuels the enemy is retarded, especially when there is no way in hell that's even noticeable or recognizable. "hey look a small little inscription that is a bunch of letters and numbers HOLY SHIT OSAMA I THINK ITS TALKING ABOUT ABRAHAM

family mostly. They already consider it a religious war, why would this make any difference? Yes I supposed it would help "prove" to them that it is, but they already consider it one, so I doubt it will change much.

It might change whether or not it is a religious/ethnic/cultural war in actuality but apparently that implication doesn't seem to bother anyone. Go kill us sum rag heads Neo.

Just nitpicking but this is a horrible way to decide policy when it comes to an expensive deadly war. I would hope that the military takes better precautions when deciding how to act or what to do. I would think that finding out the effect of this would be more complicated than just the feeling you get from talking to family.

No matter what your justifications in your head are they are not proof that it has no effect, since it is ambiguous why not just take it off the guns? It wouldn't do any harm to not have them there but it potentially could do harm having them there so why not take the safer rout?

You know I'm not in charge of it right? I never said that's the policy they should have....

[edit] to be more specific I was commenting on how people shouldn't flip their shit over it. Big difference.

Most sensible post in the entire thread. Apart from Thor's laptop.

I understand that and I agree with you that people shouldn't flip their shit over it, however I think it is flawed to say that it will have no effect because we don't know if it will or not. And also while people shouldn't flip their shit I do believe that people have a right to be concerned about it.
