How often do people rubberband? In OB I was constantly doing it and chalked it up to the amoutnt of people playing. Now it seems like I rubberband at least once ever 5 mins if not more frequent.

A couple times a day maybe. I usually reboot to fix it. I wish I knew what caused it so I could avoid it or fix it easier.
happens every time i jump off a cliff, go around a corner/tree/rock, and sometimes when i'm just running down a clean straight path
Very frequently it seems to be on close terrain eg corners you're trying to run around.
I get it on the corners/cliffs sometimes too. I think it might also be something in the client thinking you moved in a way that you shouldn't, a lot of times that it happens it will just keep happening until I move the camera so it doesn't go thru a wall.
Also 50% I drop wings while flying forward I'll land and then rubberband about 5m back up in the air, many times missing the platform I'm landing on. >.>
Seems to do it to me whenever I`m running faster than usual. (So whenever I have a speed scroll up, and more frequently when I have the chanter buff up) I`ve noticed the same going around corners and trees and whatnot. Also a friend and I both kept rubberbanding back down to the base of a column we were running up in order to climb a mountain, we both had run speed scrolls and chanter buff up. Had to stop mid-way up and then continue. (Which usually works for me in all situations)
Seems like the only way I've been able to fix it is to reboot. Even restarting the client doesn't do the trick.
This is pretty much the only time I rubberband these days. If the server is really laggy like it has been lately, I may rubberband in the abyss randomly. But its mostly in running around obstacles and corners.
Restarting and rebooting doesn't actually "fix" things. It just resets where the server thinks you are. The rubberbanding has everything to do with how the client and the server interact with each other.
So how can you reset the client and server communication?
Like others have said rubberbanding happens a lot around corners and almost always when falling for some reason. It's something restarting doesn't fix for me, and I've sort of gotten used to it. Hell the 5-10m you get extra when falling is sometimes a life saver when running from people/aether gathering.
Well this is good to hear. I was losing my mind that it may have been my internet connection or something.
I'd like to see some techie explain why this happens. Is it a matter of how their servers handle it? I've played City of Heroes, Guild Wars, and Aion all of NCSoft games which all had considerable rubberbanding. While I've never had much problems with FFXI but I do notice there is a discrepancy between where you see yourself on your end and where someone else will see you on their end.
This is mostly speculation but I'm pretty sure the only information sent between client and server is the direction and speed a character is currently moving, not their actual location (which is why when someone lags or gets disconnected you see them run into walls etc.)
When autorunning I almost always rubberband when I run into a pillar. I think the technical explanation would be that my client sends the server a message telling that I ran straigth ahead while there was a pillar (or a corner, whatever) in my way. The server thinks this is suspicious and sends me back before. Since I'm just autorunning I keep running into it (even though it appears on my screen that my character ran around it) and rubberbanding back. If I stop the autorunning then move on the side before starting running again it solves the problem.
I don't really know why they didn't do a system similar to FFXI, where you exchance the position of characters between client/server instead of just their movement information.
I think it's more related to your ping and the server, while a 50 ping may be nothing for every aspect of the game, when you turn around a tight corner the game can't follow you and ping's you back to your position before the turn. This is because it doesn't let the client act independently of the server at all, and is the reason that you get randomly dc'd from the game when your connection drops for even 1 second. In most mmo's... if you get a latency spike you can move your character and appear in that spot when your connection stabilizes, not in this game
Always seems to happen to me when im trying to jump off a cliff and glide...without fail. It pisses me off but it's better than when that Tsunami blew all those underwater cables in china and i was rubberbanding whole zones practically in C-Aion
