It didn't mention on the screen when you pick the class. Only heavy weapon i saw was heavy pistol and everybody can use that.

Heavy Weapons are a class of weapon available to all player classes in Mass Effect 2.

You can change your class and appearance when you transfer from ME 1 to ME 2.

my understanding is you can do a diff class, but might get bonuses from repeating vanguard
