Alrightio, thanks.
Alrightio, thanks.
wtf don't open an account with BoA.....they are expensive...
Well atm I'm not being charged for having the account, since I'm a student. As soon as they want to start charging me for simply having the account, I'm takin my money and gtfo that mofo
did you get overdraft protection on the cc at least? If not their fees are one of the highest, so you better have.
oh just as a small trick if you want to pay their cc online, do it through a balance transfer, not bill pay. Bill pay credits you for paying something usually 2-3 days later, whereas the transfer credits you for paying it the day you made the transfer.
I still have my "student" BoA account that I got right after finishing grad school 5.5 years ago. Still no fees, the only thing I have to keep up is the automatic transfer of $25 from my checking to my savings account every month (which I transfer back to checking usually once it's built up).
I don't overdraw my accounts or anything so I don't know about those types of fees.
yea, I got the overdraft protection and thanks, but can I transfer from a non BoA account? I basically got this so I can deposit checks from my charms I sell or other misc things. The bulk of my money is in my higher one St pete college account. They just don't have a fkin building, so to deposit a check, I'd actually have to mail it to them ect, so I just keep my student refunds in there and pay everything w/ that, just got the BoA to have something to deposit into.
that transfer is what makes it free, not it being a student account :D
but overdraft protection is free.
It's been over a year since I worked there so obviously prices have changed, but at the time I was there:
without odp = 30$ per item you overdrafted
with odp linked to a cc = 10$ fee in 100$ increments (ie. if you overdraft 60$ you only pay 10, if you overdraft 140 you pay 20 etc. etc.)
When I opened up my BoA after college, I was able to actually get a deal from them that surprisingly didn't suck. I got a half-year grace period for checking fees, after that they would continue to waive fees as long as I did the following: an auto-deposit of some form in my checking account once a month (waives checking fee and minimum balance requirement) and deposits into my savings account once a month (waives saving account fee and minimum balance). For the savings account thing, I have a small auto-transfer between my checking and savings account every payday.
Not sure if they offer the same thing these days, but it's something to file away for future knowledge for when you are out of school. If they don't offer you something like that, yeah get the hell out of there.
Only reason I'm personally with BoA is because of this deal along with the convenience factor of their ATMs and branches being everywhere. I would never use them for anything else.
Edit: beaten by archi
they still offer that ifaik. Only thing I would say is be good about checking your account for fees now and then.
One thing that pissed me off about boa is we used to open up free accounts that were called a Prima Account (in CA, there are called something else in other states). We advertised on certain days that the account would be waived for life (a code the bankers put in).
Before I left BoA decided they didn't want bankers to do that with the Prima account, so they removed the code...and made the previous free accounts no longer free. And those accounts normally cost 20$ a month unless you have a 10k balance in your account.
You can imagine the amount of pissed people that found out their free for life accounts were no longer free...
Holy crap, lol. Instead of worrying about if it's enough, I should just be grateful we don't have it like that.
The way credit cards are reported are kind of strange, many financial institutions don't report a max credit limit, they just report the highest balance you've ever had and the current balance as of the last billing cycle. Having a card show a zero balance all the time isn't a bad thing, it just could be a little better if it shows you actually using that credit. Obviously it's much more important to pay the bill on time as late payments will hurt your credit a lot. So if you want to pay the card off immediately after you use it then go ahead, it isn't really hurting you.
Well, I guess in the end it will still build his credit, because he'll at least have a credit history (which is better than nothing at all).
If you're at school/college in the US don't banks give you a bunch of free stuff if you open an account with them?
Here in Ireland they always do, part of the hook you young and bleed you dry over the rest of your life strategy.
Get one of those accounts, get your free stuff, cash your check. Then you can decide to keep the account or not.
Who the hell uses cheques anyway? Haven't you guys heard of bank transfers?!
I've never owned and never used a cheque book, it sounds so backward, lol. The only people I've ever received cheques from have been my grandmothers, and that's cos they don't know how to use a computer anyway.
