This was a good episode imo, I don't understand people rage. The "light" was a bit too magical to my liking (I would have prefered something more simple), but that's not really important at this point. It's like everytime the special effect team is involved in a scene, it will automatically look bad.

Did they answer any questions? Maybe not directly, but it still shaping the island considerably for the finale. We know there is nothing "holy" about the guardian's role (stealing children, killing the mother), we know the loop has been going on since forever (she was definitively not the first person to drink in that half empty bottle), we know there is a bigger evil entity than MiB (the ghost lured him to the evil side), we know every human has a bit of good and evil inside them (we already did I guess), etc...

Pesonally, I'm satisfied with this until the finale. I have a better idea of what's going on and where it's going

Anway, If I had to make one complaint, it would be season 5. The time travel twist was completely uneeded in retrospective, because it brought nothing but useless complexity. Desmond's mind travel would have been more than enough to create two differents timeline, and we wouldn't be stuck with a convoluted story right now.

    As I mentioned earlier, I could see smokey being another party, not the original MiB, but the more I think about it, the less it makes sense. For instance, how come smokey can't hurt Jacob, as the brothers were supposed to be the only ones with that restriction. If it's just cause he's in MiB's form, just change form, then go shank Jacob. On that note.. if they weren't supposed to be able to hurt each other, how did Jacob beat him senseless? >.>;

I guess it was MiB who told the Dharma folks and whoever came before them how to construct the wheel, etc as a means to harness the power of the light. But if that's the case, why did he never turn the wheel? It was kinda cool thinking though how MiB wanted the wheel turned and then having Locke turn it while disguised as Christian was part of his plan. Also, if the wells are connected to the source of power, why throw Desmond down into one? Seems awfully risky thing to do when his plans are approaching fruition..

Just so thrown off by this episode and what it tried to establish. Their mom made such a big deal about not leaving the island, but Jacob clearly left. And especially if he's supposed to be protecting the light and keeping smokey in check, couldn't smokey rain havoc or leave during his excursions? It just feels the light was kinda thrown in. I understand they were trying to give a more concrete form to the island's power, magnetism, etc, and even that the light has been present before (at the very least the wheel), but it feels like it happened far too late in the story and really didn't explain as much as we had all been expecting from this episode...

About smokey, Jack's father's coffin was found close to the cave where MiB's body was found. It could explain why Smokey turned into him at some point, since new body entering in contact with the "light" probably mean a new Smokey .

Also, Locke met the monster at some point in the first season and said "I looked into the eye of the Island, and what I saw... was beautiful". We thought he was talking about the monsters, but now, it seem possible that the monster brought him to the light.

If Locke saw the light, it would explain why Smokey was able to take his form once he got his body back.

At this point, I don't think "leaving the island" should be understood literally. The island isn't the actual island, but the whole reality surrounding it. Even if you leave the island, this reality is going to catch up on you sooner or later and bring you back.

Dharma folk wouldnt build a wheel made of a wood imo, but that's not important. The ghosts could have made people do it at any time after. Or smokey could have built it himself later (before realizing he couldnt use it). What I'm curious about is how the lady destroyed that tunnel. It's almost like she was a Smokey herself. >_>

My boyfriend was talking with his friends about the possibility of the mother also being some kind of smokey, and that she was also the one who appeared to MiB in the form of their real mother as a means to strike up sibling rivalry so that he would kill her (release her from the island) later on.

So-so episode, but definitely left us with a lot to talk about.

I figured the Dharma people didn't build the wheel, that's what I meant by whoever came before them. But it'd be easy for him to disguise himself as a random scientist, infiltrate a Dharma meeting, and then suggest they dig at one of the pockets of magnetism.

    Misread that, sorry.

Maybe he did manipulate them, but I don't think that's important. Human are greedy, and dharma initiative was there to exploit the island for their own interest. It's only normal they would dig at these location.

If it was really his name, I don't understand why they kept it secret for so long.

The sneak peek was nice, I'm actually curious what's going to happen next.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Jacob and MiB aren't really ageless? Think about it. Real mom possibly from Darmaville stumbles upon the crazy lady, has kids, gets head smashed in, kids grow up with crazy lady, 30 years pass, Oceanic flight crashes, crazy mom dies, Jack Kate and Locke find the backgammon piece, story progresses normally?

Have they been stuck on this island for nothing this whole time?

After rewatching the ep tonight, I might have changed my mind on things, hear me out.

I'm beginning to think that the smoke monster was already on the island before Jacob and MiB (I hate that they still didn't give him a name) were born, hence their fake mother needing to be there to protect it. The smoke monster was not able to kill her directly, it needed a "loophole" (as it would need to use hundreds of years later to kill Jacob), so it appeared to Jacob's brother as the ghost of their real mother. (She died on island, so smoky could assume her form.) It plants seeds of distrust and hatred, and must wait.

Years later the fake mother learns of MiB's plan to leave the island, comes to him down in the well, and attempts to kill him to stop it. MiB survives however, possibly saved by the Smoke creature after the fake mother leaves. The smoke monster then proceeds to murder all of the MiB's people, destroy the village, and cover the well, to make it look like Jacob and MiB's mother did it stop him, thus angering MiB to the point that he would kill her, and thus, release Smoke monster finally. However, the Smoke monster likely was unaware that Jacob had already been chosen to be the new protector, so the death of their fake mother did not allow its escape.

Jacob then proceeds to send MiB down THE WELL OF SOULS or whatever the "light" is supposed to be. Now, supposedly this area is where the Smoke monster resides, as he had been witnessed emerging from underground in various places all over the island over many episodes. Jacob couldn't kill his brother, but Smoke monster was now able to do so because MiB was no longer a candidate after Jacob assumes the role of island protector. Smoke monster gets this nice new body shoved down his well and takes control of the form, dumping the body somewhere along the jungle which Jacob later finds.

Knowing that Jacob is the new protector, the smoke monster chooses to take the form of his brother, the MiB, as a constant reminder and "fuck you" to Jacob over the course of hundreds of years.

I believe that the smoke monster manipulated MiB much in the same way that it manipulated John Locke, telling them they were both "special", appearing to help them both but in actuality using them as the "loophole" to kill the island's protector.

Of course, this theory could be completely squashed in the next two episodes, but hey, theorizing is fun and all.

Thought it was known for some time that was his name.

    Spoiler: show
Not exact but there are similarities to the Jacob and Esau from the bible. Twin brothers, Esau losing his birthright and in in Book of Jubilees was told they weren't allowed to kill each other.

So basically, the goal of the Smoke is to have the Island's protector killed before a new candidate assumes the role of it, this is probably how he can leave the Island. As long as the Island has a protector, and we now know that the protector doesn't even have to be physically ON the Island (Jacob left the Island, and visited the Losties when they were children, and also later on in their lives), the Smoke can't leave. If the protector dies before someone else drinks the Wine, it probably releases him. This is why SmokeLocke is trying to kill the candidates through manipulation and lies. Once they're all gone, there can no longer be a candidate and thus frees Smokey

Also, Jacob has to be ageless since he visits the main characters at different times in their lives and he always looks the same.

drinking the wine makes you ageless, though i don't think it necessarily makes you the islands protector because didn't jacob give Richard the wine a couple eps ago?
