They could have clarified it better, but regardless of what happened, the only effect of the bomb was to send them back to present time. That's all.

However, as they were still on the island when they were sent back to the future, I'm lead to believe either the plane went down for some other unknown reason, or an alternate timeline was in fact created (possibly one that we never actually see) in which flight 815 landed safely, explaining why Jack and co. were still on the island in the current timeline.

Headache inducing, to say the least.
I think that was the biggest question raised in the last season that everybody was waiting an answer for this season, and the finale chickened out and avoided answering it altogether.

Not to say it wasn't a great finale (now that I'm on the same page as everybody after Baelorn's explanation), but not answering some of the bigger questions, such as the nuke and the statue, is still somewhat disappointing.

Which makes the island-on-the-ocean-floor sequence a very cheese move.

Also remember, before the nuke went off, the time-traveling crew also made Dharma people evacuate the island and killed off everyone who was working around the to-be Swan station. If the nuke didn't do anything to the island, affecting the "history" of the Dharma surely did.

I guess it could be argued that way. I think they could have done without that shot.

Why did you think the nuke sank the island though? I mean the sunken houses and shit were in great shape if a nuke had done that.

I don't know anything about what the nuke did, which was exactly what I was hoping this season would answer.

Who's to say that hadn't happened in the normal timeline? They could have easily come back to study what happened.

That's the problem is that a lot of it isn't clarified. I don't have an issue with it but I guess I understand why people do.

The bomb was just used as a plot device to return them to present time. If the bomb did create an alternate reality it was never touched on the show. The sunken island at the beginning of the season was just used to throw the audience in a different direction to make us believe that the reality being shown was an alternate one.

Which, again, is a very cheese move. It's one thing to keep things mysterious, another thing entirely to out-right deceive the audience.

It was a Red Herring. Its a common tactic to make people think one thing in a show/film and mean another.

The island was sunk in alt-world because there they had all moved on and didn't need it anymore.

It was essentially the producers saying 'its the characters that matter'

I am happy they didn't touch alternate realities. If they did they would have to deal with the time loop that you brought up and would most probably have many more disappointed viewers no matter which way they dealt with it. Leaving it alone allows the audience to have their own ideas of what happens to alternate realities and I believe not mentioning it keeps it simple without worrying about paradoxes and such.

Really surprised so many of you liked the ending.

I realized before the finale started how cheap and almost pointless the entire show felt when thinking about MIB. We learned that he was just a regular, good guy and all he wanted to do was leave the island. If he were to get what he wanted and leave the island, it obviously wouldn't be in the form of the Smoke Monster (this is proven in the finale). So the central struggle of keeping MIB on the island so "hell" doesn't spread to the world makes absolutely no sense. It's not nearly as important as anyone has made it out to be (Jacob in particular), it's quite trivial actually. MIB in the world as a human would be hell? I don't think so.

Now as for the finale, I liked the episode a lot... until they confirmed what I dreaded: that the Flash Sideways was a waste of half a season. Yes it made sense, but them all being dead was so underwhelming.

Really didn't like that Jack didn't use the incantation when anointing Hurley protector (unless of course Hurley didn't get Mother/Jacob powers) and how Jack should have turned into a Smoke Monster after putting the plug back in the hole but didn't.

A red herring is a misdirection, making one thing significant to hide the importance of another. But the thing used to misdirect the audience is actually part of the story, not something made-up.

Lost has had plenty of red herrings, such as all the use-and-throw-away Dharma stations around the island, but I don't think they ever made up something that its sole purpose is to throw off the audience. Even the polar bear had its role as part of the Dharma experiement.

Turning off the light made smoke monster human, not him leaving the island.

What cave? You are referring to the original MiB and the mom?

Exactly. He planned to leave the island as a human, not the Smoke Monster (which would be impossible anyway).

You sure he planned to become human? He sure as hell looked surprised when he tasted blood after Jack punched him in the face.
