All the TNG films would have worked better as TV movies, though I do admit paying to see all but the last two in the theater.

The idea of having Star Trek 2 in theaters by this next summer is not looking likely, and I think that is great news. As much as I would love to see a sequel today, I would much rather have a kick-ass story and characters to back it up. J.J. Abrams is hard at work with his writers, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, to flesh out characters and story elements before heading into pre-production, casting, scheduling and shooting the film.
Collider spoke with Abrams who was at the Television Critics Asscoiation to promote Person of Interest. Of course you can expect that the onversation got around to the Star Trek sequel - “Are you back focused on Star Trek 2 now?”
Yeah. There have been a lot of things that we’ve been working on, a lot of important elements that we just know we need to really nail down and solve. Once you say, “We’re ready to go, but we don’t have a finished script yet,” or “I’m directing the thing and here’s the release date, but we don’t have a finished script,” what starts to happen – and I’ve seen this happen with a lot of friends of mine – is that you’re suddenly in production on a movie that they’re thinking, “Oh my god, we weren’t really ready. We thought we’d get it done in time, but we didn’t.” So, while we have a moment to say, “Let’s get the important things figured out,” then all the pre-production stuff will come. But, I just want to make sure that we’re putting the story and the characters, the cast and the crew, and most importantly the audience, first before we start talking about exactly which locations we’re going to be shooting at and what the wardrobe and visual effects budgets are. It just seems important that we get the important stuff right first.

Oh wow, didn't know the Fringe writers worked on the script for these too.![]()
Honestly can't complain about delays when they are trying to make sure everything is worked out first before they rush into shooting. So props to them for that.
Keep Shatner at an arms distance. Generations already used the "new captain meets epic old captain" card and it turned out terribly. We got Spock in the first ST and it turned out well all things considered but can we leave the old school out of it now?
Vulcan is gone meaning alot of potential for a good story and the last thing we need is Shatner hamming it up. I like Shatner but we've seen enough of him and he's going to demand more than a simple cameo.

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/11/4...-star-tre.htmlAccording to Variety director J.J. Abrams wants Benicio Del Toro to take on the main villain role in his upcoming Star Trek sequel! I would love to see Del Toro in a Star Trek film, the guy makes for a great sinister villain, and he would be awesome! It was reported that an official offer could go out to the actor by the time the weekend is over. "Insiders say Del Toro has met with Abrams but, in an effort to keep the role a secret, still doesn't know exactly what it is."
Abrams is all set and ready to direct they sequel that was written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof. The films production is expected to start sometime in early 2012.

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/11/1...formation.htmlJ.J. Abrams' highly anticipated Star Trek sequel is progressing and moving forward. TrekMovie got a hold of some new information on the film giving us some details on when the film will start shooting, the locations it will shoot at, the script and casting.
The sequel to Star Trek is scheduled to start shooting on January 15th 2012 for its release sometime in 2013. Screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been working on a third draft of the script, but that it's basically all ready to go. The site reports that the draft they are working on is to "ensure the film fits into the budget the Paramount has set. The studio is said to be "very enthusiastic" about the project and very supportive of producer/director Abrams and his core team."
Some of the special effects shots for the movie are currently being worked on by ILM. As for where the film will shoot, "Abrams himself traveled to Hawaii to scout a location which is being seriously considered for a "jungle planet." Shooting will also include a museum in Los Angeles standing in for what a source said was a "famous Star Trek location." As per usual with a Star Trek film, studio shooting will take place on a number of stages on the Paramount lot."
Unfortunately there are no story details, but you can expect the whole original cast to reprise their roles in the film. They are also discussing actors to take on any new roles, none of which have been cast yet. This includes Benicio del Toro as the villain, which I hope really happens!

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/12/2...el-says-j.htmlThere has been a lot of talk about who Benicio del Toro would play in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel ever since it was announced he was sought for a role in November. According to Latino Review, del Toro will be playing the role of none other than Khan in the highly anticipated sequel. Not long after that news broke, HitFix is reporting that he will in fact NOT be playing the iconic character.
Who to believe?! Latino Review's El Mayimbe is fairly reliable in his news. On the flipside, HitFix's Drew McWeeny spoke directly to Abrams, who is directing the film. Based on that I personally believe Abrams over the Latino Review post. There have been instances of directors fabricating information to keep their plot undere wraps.
Here is what Abrams had to say about Del Toro as Khan - "Not true."
Alice Eve was just added to the cast this past week, and is reportedly going to be new to the canon. Del Toro may be in the film, but is not likely to play Khan. I have a feeling that Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof are a tad bit more creative than to make a rehash of Wrath of Khan.
Filming is slated to start in early 2012 with Paramount planning to release the pic on May 17, 2013. There is still one more major role left to cast. It is rumored to be another villain, “someone who's older and in more of a supporting character to del Toro.”

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/11/3...ek-sequel.htmlJ.J. Abrams has found a new cast member for his highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. Variety reports that Alice Eve has been cast in a part that is believed to be new to the canon. The She’s Out of My League star beat out Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) and Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) for the role. Paramount declined to comment on this news, but her deal is expected to be locked down soon. She will hopefully star opposite Benicio del Toro, who’s deal is also pending to play the role of the villain in the sequel. They will join most fo the cast from the first film, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
Abrams is directing based on the script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof. The sequel will be produced by Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, and David Ellison under Bad Robot and Skydance Productions. Filming is slated to start in early 2012 with Paramount planning to release the pic on May 17, 2013.

http://geektyrant.com/news/2011/12/5...ek-sequel.htmlThere is no need to speculate on whether Benicio Del Toro will star as Khan in the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Vulture repors that the actor has dropped out of discussions for the role over monetary issues.
The film is slated to start filming in January, so Abrams is in a tight spot to fill the villainous void left by del Toro's departure. Vulture also reports that Khan is indeed the film's villain, which makes earlier reports to the contrary null and void. Abrams likes to keep his storylines under wraps so there is still no confirmation to that news.
Only time will tell who will play the villain in the highly-anticipated film.
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment...quel-khan.html
So he dropped out because he wasn't going to get paid enough, well fuck that guy. At least we still get Alice Eve!
I dunno how I feel about having Khan being the villain. Part of what made Wrath of Khan so bad ass was all the precursor stuff between him and Kirk from the tv series. Is Abrams going to focus the film on trying to create the discord/drama/build up between the two? I mean the Trek fan in me thinks could be awesome, but it also worries me -_-
I like all these developments. Alice is sexyyy. Del Toro would have fit but I'd rather see a lesser known actor play Khan.
Am I the only person who is sick of alternate Star Trek timelines? Nemesis really threw a kink into the "real timeline", but I would really love to see things continue off from where the actual Trek left off and not all this alternate time line bullshit.
