I wasn't... crying??? This topic has been brought up a million times in other threads, and it always leads to a WoW vs FF war. But of course it's easier to be a dick than take a joke.

(And for the record, I'm all for jumping in FFXIV.)

Even if it's gimmicky, it adds a lot to the epicness of the moment.
You don't jump from airship to airship you use a rocket pack. Jumping in game results in the developers wanting to put jumping PUZZLES and platforming in areas at times(ala Aion). There's no real point to having jump other then wall climbing over certain areas or making a tool of yourself in town/dungeons. The only tactical thing i've ever used jumping for was removing the bitter cold from Hodir/Nexus last boss, and even that you can just tap movement key.

I know it's a rocket pack, but it's essentially the same as jumping (except you point where you want to land instead of pressing space). A gameplay like FFXI wouldnt allow this, unless you want to go through a long text menu, followed by a long cutscenes....it doesnt feel the same.

If you want example where jumping is used, take any "ice patch" (ie: anub). You will want to jump on top of it to save some time. Some bosses involve minor platforming element as well, but this fall in the platforming aspect I guess (which is a fun way to test people when done properly).

Either way, the #1 reason why I would like to see jumping (and like I said, something like zelda is more than fine) is that it lead to more interesting dungeon/environment design. Because you lose nothing, and it open up new possibilities, you will get more diversity out of the game.

Well, I thought you were the one crying last time this argument popped (for the record, it's the 2nd time I see, and I read everything). My bad if you werent the one.

Jumping would be wonderful. I'd hope tarus did some crazy flip jump like in asuran fists.

No, I'm not. That was simply one example. See my other posts, but I'll sum it up again: I'm asking for developers to THINK outside of the "you vs. the world" mentality. Not every "monster" wants to fight all the time, and especially fight me all the time. Not every random raider in fallout 3 (hate to use it again, but it applies) is in the mood to do nothing but dog me simply because I'm on the screen.

Not every monster will ignore any other monster of any other type, simply because an "adventurer" is there. Some will ignore everyone. Some should fight everyone. Design a system that is more realistic than a "I fight you because that's all I've ever known and can imagine doing" X vs. Y system that currently plagues the combat philosophy.

Incorrect. Jumping certainly has a use and a place when done correctly and when given a purpose. Take the Arathi Basin Battleground. Jumping from the Lumbermill to the Blacksmith to reinforce allies there or cap the fort is an excellent tactical use of the jump feature, especially given that riding all the way down the path would be a slower, and far more boring feat.

Jumping works well so long as there is a true use for it, and hell, I found uses for it in almost everything I did. Simply the act of jumping over low fences on the various farmgrounds was useful. Do you seriously want another "fun" feature like having to walk around the stupid fences and .035 inch raises and drops in terrain at the entrance to the crawler's nest? Its more unrealistic and far more unneeded than any jump feature in a game.

As for the so-called "tools" that jump around in town? So what? Its better than being completely limited in your expressions in town. In RotZ, what the hell could you do to really express yourself in town? Sit on the floor? You couldn't even SIT IN CHAIRS! I'd fix things like THAT before you start talking about jumping killing some sort of "immersion" factor.

    sign me up!

I keep going back to Asheron's call... I loved that game. Any xp gained you would apply to your skills to raise their level. Jumping and running both had levels. I had maxxed them out nearly when i quit the game, and it was awesome! It proved as a helpful tactic when pvping. Jump up on a building where most people cant reach you becaus eno one ever raised their jumping or running skills, debuff them and then jump down and catch them because you run faster and jump higher. It was kind of retarded, i think my char could jump like 20-30 feet in the air.

That whole fight was good times. Music, mechanics, teamwork, yelling at the idiot that doesn't understand the polarity concept.

Best music in all of Naxx, IMO.

You couldn't get on top of things in town to be a tool in FFXI?

Why did you necro bump this month old thread; especially hate you because I had to load page 3 to see what the last post date was, since you're sitting at the top of page 4.

Didin't see it posted anywhere so:

No pics yet but it is widely being reported that Weekly Famitsu and Dengeki PlayStation will have big articles on FFXIV this week.

I'm just going to list a bunch of the things being reported. Remember, we don't have pics yet and the magazines don't come out until tomorrow or the day after. In other words, all of this is UNCONFIRMED at the time I write this. Some of it we have heard before tho. Also, I will probably misspell a lot of things because I'm not going to bother looking up English terms. Don't hurt me.

The writeups will have pictures from the alpha build and interviews.

When fighting, you have to think of distance and position. Also, moving parties will be the norm compared to the non-moving pull back to camp style of FFXI.

MP will not auto-refresh. You will have to be careful with how you manage MP. There will be ways to gain MP.

There will be 6 elements. Some people are saying that Light and Dark will not be present.

    Puglists have steal.

You can throw javelins at enemies that are not in a battle state to do a sort of sneak attack.

Marauder's have low accuracy. They also have a meditate-like ability to store... something. Probably TP.

Horticulturalist are the only ones that can see digging spots meant for them. They can dig up stuff during battle that can be used to back up the party. The more of these people you have, the more items you can get it sounds like.

When a blacksmith repairs your weapon, you don't have to hand it over!!!

The alpha build requires a computer with high specs. Some are saying its due to a lack of config options. The final product will require lower specs.

    VRAM512MB is enough.

Not all parts of character making will be present in the beta. In particular, you cannot do facial customization.

There is a mode where you can walk around to regain HP.

There are spells you can cast while moving.

There are many ways to earn TP. You can earn TP from spellcasting as well.

General parties are 6 to 8 people. Alliances are also possible.

There are alpha build screenshots. People say there are small things that are different from the German alpha build we saw at Gamescom.

Gladiators and Puglists have a way to gain hate.

Gladiators have a version of Phalanx different from FF11. Their version is where you can guard with a shield while still attacking.

Puglists have a provoke ability called Whistle.
