No Sound When Using HDMI

I recently got a HMDI cable so I could use my tv as a monitor but when I hook it up I don't get any sound from it. My video card is a EVGA GTX 260 and it has 2 DVI-I ports on it. It also came with a DVI to VGA adapter and a DVI to HDMI adapter.

When I hook it up using VGA I use the speaker cable to connect my computer to the tv and it works but when i switch to a HDMI cable the sound stops working. The strange thing is that the computer says that there is sound coming from the HDMI and even when I change the sound option to play from speakers it says the speakers have sound but neither one plays anything.

Am I not using the right cables or is there some thing I need to change on the computer to make it work?

DVI carries no sound even if you use a DVI>HDMI adapter. What is happening is your computer is recognizing that you are using HDMI and is trying to send sound through to the TV but it can't because it's coming out of the DVI port.

It happened to me on my old computer, but doesn't on my new one for some strange reason. Anyway, I'm not sure if I fixed it permanently but I remember a quick fix I would do if I wanted to get it working, although it was still a pain. Boot up the PC without it connected through HDMI, once it has booted up, connected the monitor and it should work. If it switches to HDMI audio automatically then you are going to have to try and fiddle around with the settings in the audio options or try new audio drivers.

Had a similar issue when hooking up a DVR box to my Gateway FHD2400. Issue was resolved after making a change to the HDMI output settings on the box itself so that it would be compatible with the monitor.
