    Ps3 help~

O ye' all mighty BG, i hither. Lol. Friends Ps3 stopped working a few months ago and his 2 year warranty was gone. Instead of sending it in, he decided to purchase a new ps3 slim. He gave me the old Ps3 for free, and told me i could do whatever with it. I'm in Canada and I hear that for $179C + shipping i can send to Ontario to get it repaired. I hear Sony will just send me a refurbished ps3 slim instead of fixing the old ps3. Some people have issues with this because it won't be backwards compatible, i can care less. Another option would be take it to a local place and get it fixed. Or I could fix it myself. I haven't had time to sit down and play around with it yet. All I know is when i try to turn it on a yellow light comes on.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the process of repairing my baby too. I just have to replace the defective blu ray laser. Anyway, from what I've read, your problem is a bit more complicated. Your best option would be to send it to Sony or try other alternatives: http://knightsgamingrepair.com A fellow BGer recommended this site, and I'm going to buy the part from them.

Also when you send it to Sony they'll send you the same model.

Hold the power button and eject button at the same time til you hear 3 beeps..

It hard resets the whole ps3.

it hard resets your ps3, the problem is that your ps3 will turn on, but doesn't show anything on the screen with the yellow light right?

my cousin had yellow light on his ps3, wouldn't show on screen, so he gave it to me to fix. Its a simple fix.

Or was it just the power button? I'm not sure. But its one of those, and it could fix your ps3! Wouldn't hurt to try.

So either hold the eject + power button til you hear 3 beeps
    or just the power button.
but either way, you will hear beeps!

also do this when the ps3 is on with the yellow light being shown.

It's the power button, but that's like a system recovery. The blinking yellow light is caused by overheating, which is more like a hardware issue and can only be fixed by reflowing the chip. Good luck~

    This ^^

Think it as.... the PS3's version of Xbox's Read ring of death.

Is there a way to figure if its a flowing issue or the Power Supply unit?

Yellow light is hardware malfunction. Usually caused by the solder cracking, but other problems like blu-ray diodes and power supply problems also cause it.

If you want to reflow the PS3, you will have to open it up. Youtube "gilksy" on youtube and he has video demonstrations on what to do and what you will need.

Also, unless you are going to reapply the warranty sticker that you have to remove when you open the PS3, Sony may refuse to fix/replace the PS3.

EDIT: Reflowing will only fix the solder problem. And some say it is only a temporary fix and the solder can crack again, some say it has fixed their PS3 permanently. You may want to also reflux it though.

my best friends ps3 yellow lighted on him. he ended up taking it apart and putting the main board in the oven. <_< cooking it re-soldered some shit to stop it from overheating. Been working for 2 weeks now.

I've had a disk read error on my PS3 for ages now. I looked online to have it sent to Sony for repair (fkn thing's warranty expired 3 weeks prior to breaking). The site said there was a flat $150 fee to fix the issue. So I haven't had the money to send it in. I'm hoping with tax season coming up I'll get enough of a return to get it fixed, or just buy a new slim, and get the super extended warranty. With FFXIII coming out I'm going to nerdrage if I won't be able to play it for quite some time.

I have some seriously shitty luck with PS's. I've had friends that have had the same unit for 5+ years and it works perfectly. I burned through 5 different PS2s, 2 PS1s, and now a PS3. In the case of the PS2's and PS3's I got the 1 year warranty and the fucking things broke at about the 13-15 month mark on every damn one of them. 5 out of the 6 were all disk read issues.

Before anyone says, well get an Xbox. Yeah been there done that, not interested in doing that ever again.

Hope you get your shit fixed.

My plan is to just reflux it, the liquid is like $10. Doesn't seem to difficult and we'll see what happens. Lol.

Nope they typically are stored in a container, to keep them and the cords out of the way. In the container, they sit on top of my games case (nothing sitting on them in any way). When they are brought out to actually play it's put on top of my living room table, and in some cases just on the carpet, but 90% of the time they are on the table.

In the case of 1-2 of those PS2's they were probably just worn the hell out. My buddies and I lived in military dorms so we would be playing games for hours on end. But I haven't played like that in quite a few years. Hell the PS3 I used to play MGS, and a couple of other games, never played for more than like 2-3 hours max. Usually the console is left out till I get around to putting it away like a day later, rinse repeat.

I take very good care of anything of value. All the PS1/2 games I've had for 7+ years are all in excellent condition.

You'll still need to reflow it if you plan on refluxing.
