Today I just bought an HDTV and I need to know if I use my HDMI cable can I still use my stock ps3 cords to plug into my stereo so I can play it over my speakers or will having both cords plugged into my ps3 at the same time cause problems? Thanks.

You have to set up the PS3 to put the audio through whatever you're using that isn't the HDMI cable. It's pretty easy to find through the Audio Options from the main PS3 menu.
So I can have the video come through the TV and the sound through my stereo or will it come through both my TV and stereo speakers. Also is it bad to try this. I don't want to fuck with it if it can cause issues
You can run audio sepritly yes.I have my ps3 hooked up to my HDTV with audio going out over the yellow/white cables that came with my ps3 to seprit speakers. Its in the audio settings.
And you don't even have to buy a seperate "HDMI kit" to do this due to terrible port design on the back of the console! I've been doing it for years, you'll be fine. System settings > Audio Options.
Ya, I run my PS3 through a HDMI to DVI cord for video and the normal PS3 cords for audio.
I've had no problems since running it like this.
I"ve been using HDMI for both systems hooked up to the tv and optical for the sound should do about the same thing right. Sorry i don't know much about stereo systems and sound quality but it works really well at least for me.
The only thing to really keep in mind is that without using HDMI for audio you can't pass HD audio streams (DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD). Not really a PS3-specific thing, but something to keep in mind for Blu-Ray.
