    VMWare help

    Hi

I'm running windows 7 on my laptop, and I'm using VMWare Workstation 7 to make an Ubuntu 9.10 VM.

Basically, what I need to do is get it to pick up my wireless internet across campus.

Which I believe would have something to do with bridging the wireless into vmware or something or other I don't really know and googling hasn't been too effective.

Atheros AR 9285 is my wireless card if that matters, and I also have a crappy little external usb wifi thinger which I bought a while back for like $15 and never really used, if that could help any in this situation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

All you need to do really is to set the network to bridged mode. It'll then just basically share the internet of the host OS. It should be in the settings for the VM.

Don't you mean NAT mode? Bridge means the virtualized OS will try to claim an extra IP address like it was hooked up to a switch, I thought.

personnally i would do this so you don,t create yourself problems later

Open VMware Workstation in windows and do edit > virtual network editor go to host virtual network mapping tab, and take any VM that is free and link your wireless there.

Then simply edit the network card settings of your ubuntu and link it to VM# that you choose.

Because if you do Bridge network on a PC with both Ethernet nd wireless, and one day you got and plug both exemple on 2 different network, VMware wouldn't know which one to link it to

This is on a laptop, so I'll only be using a wired ethernet connection on very rare occasions, and I don't think I'll be using any VMs when that happens.

I'll try what you mentioned in a little bit when I can, thanks.

    No go

I tried the usb device, and it picked it up, but, it doesn't seem to be working. I guess I have to configure it? I'm a linux noob

    Just wanna know this

When you said you need to transport Wireless across campus, do they lock their WIFI by MAC adress? Because if so the VM mac adress is different from your real PC, so to access wifi that way you would have to give your Windows 7 Wifi card Mac and the MAc adress your VM linux card has

I'd recommend reading up on some howtos on setting up wireless stuff and networking under linux. google for your card and your version of ubuntu and see what comes up. I've no idea about ubuntu but I know that for many other linux distros drivers/setup doesn't work out of the box, so you'll probably have to do a bit of work to get it going. Think of it as a good introduction to using linux

and as a good introduction as to why it's not really user friendly... ;P

Do you have to register your computer for the first time? or can anyone just walk on campus and use their wireless? If you had to go to like a registration page or something then yes they are looking at your mac address to give/deny access.

Wireless anyone can connect, but you have to sign in before being able to do anything.
