I actually thought the constructs were pretty nifty.

However, the concept itself didn't make sense to me.

When training, the big ugly guy made a temporary sun near Hal to show him the effects of gravity. Combined with the fact that everyone keeps touting how the rings are "the most powerful weapons in the universe", it seems silly that all they do when they fight Parallax is through a net over him and start shooting light rays at his head... Make a black hole in his face, or a giant star, or split a few atoms near him.. It just seems like they weren't even trying..

In the comics the rings produced up to a point were unable to affect Parallax because he was trapped inside the Central Power Battery and put that weakness in all of them. I think it's probably one of those things they tried to take from the comics but didn't really fit with the story depicted. Parallax being the first lifeform to feel fear/representing the yellow power of fear in the comics makes sense that the green rings wouldn't be as effective against him. In the movie, he's just a guardian who has been corrupted by the power of fear, so yeah.. Can't really explain why the other Lanterns didn't do some of the things you're suggesting (maybe because the 'GLs shall not kill' rule is in effect since the Sinestro Wars haven't happened), but as far as Hal, he hadn't completed the training and so probably didn't know everything he could do/have a lot of control over the ring's powers.

His point was Hal is a noob yet makes a hot wheels track, yet the greatest GL warriors make a net and shoot dots with no imagination as their great first strike against the most powerful enemy ever.

Oh, well, in that case I'm going back to my earlier comment about how they needed to focus more on the Corps. How long was that fight anyway -- less than 5 minutes? If they had extended it a bit, maybe they could have showcased some of the Corps' skills.

Warner Bros. To Pursue ‘Green Lantern’ Sequel

The studio won't walk away from the superhero franchise, despite the film’s soft box office performance.
Warner Bros. is already planning a sequel to Ryan Reynolds' superhero pic Green Lantern, despite the film’s soft performance at the box office.

Sources say Warners still believes in the franchise, even if the studio is “somewhat disappointed” with Green Lantern’s result.
Over the weekend, Green Lantern fell a steep 66% at the domestic box office, grossing $18.4 million for a cume of $89.3 million. That’s a big decline.
Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said the movie is settling in, pointing out that fanboy pics often see a significant drop-off in their second weekends.

Still, Green Lantern fell off more than recent superhero pics Thor and X-Men: First Class. Thor dropped 47% in its second weekend, while First Class dropped 56%.
Similar films that have seen the same sort of dip that Green Lantern did include Hulk, which dropped nearly 70% in its second outing.

Green Lantern cost $200 million to produce before a sizeable marketing spend (rival studios say it was one of the most expensive on record). Warners, preparing for the end of Harry Potter, needs new franchises, so was willing to invest big in Green Lantern.
A formidable obstacle standing in Green Lantern’s way now is Paramount’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which opens in theaters around the globe on Tuesday night.

Well if we get Sinestro Wars like it looks, it should be an easy sell to the fanbase.

It's definitely going to lose money, quite surprising.

Should have hired a better director instead of all that advertising.

Are the international receipts in? It's pretty rare for a superhero movie to lose money no matter how bad it is.

I always wonder how studios screw up movies that really shouldn't be that hard to make.

Hal Jordan may be the central Lantern but he never seems to be the most popular, part of the charm of Green Lantern is all the other lanterns.

They should have just had the whole thing focus on space lantern stuff like Hal trainning with other lanterns and maybe had it end with a random space alien trying to attack earth and Hal showing what he's learned. Mix in some foreshadowing of the existence of beings like Paralax, a yellow weakness, and Sinestro being slightly off sometimes and they would have been good to go for all the sequals they could want.

It was down to that much in the US last weekend too. Is it fair to say that this movie was a flop yet?

That, it was #1 movie on its premiere weekend and this was probably supposed to be the first of the movies to prep a Justice League movie, so w/ a Superman reboot iminent and Batman one on the horizon by 2014, they'd be dumb to not make a sequel.

They could have just went with the Manhunter's uprising. It's basically the same story they told with the "Yellow power being the first attempt at a corps", only it could've been told much easier and much better.

Basically, for those non-comic fans, the Manhunters were an army of robots the Guardians made to uphold order in space before they made the Lanterns. But being robots, they do what most robots do and go all "destroy all life" so the guardians had to blow em all up. But a few survived, hid on other planets among their native dominant species and when the time was right, they rose up and attacked Oa directly in an attempt to get their revenge on. They could've used the Manhunters by having them start rising up on Earth after Hal quits the lanterns, forcing him to fight some off on his own. Then he has to rush to Oa and warn everyone before they have a big final grand battle where the whole Corps get involved. A bunch of super robots swarming all over would've been a hell of a better villain then a walking Forever Alone rage face and a giant space poop.

There isn't going to be a Justice League film, there wasn't a single building block laid down in GL for anything other then a second GL movie. The only reason the Avengers movie can work is because from the very start of Ironman 1, the big plan was to do the super group film. As such, every subsequent stand alone title has been done in a way that lets them all fit together with no continuity issues what so ever. If DC ever wanted to do the whole JL thing, they'd need every single stand alone film to build on each other and have some sort of continuity between each one that links them all to the same universe. And I just don't see DC being able to do that.

The lead up to the Green Lantern Wars revealed that it was Krona (the Guardian who became Parallax in the movie) who reprogrammed the Manhunters to show the flaws in having an emotionless police force (or show they could be reprogrammed.. think it was the problems with an emotionless police force issue though).

Except the plan for the Justice league movie is to reboot all of the heroes and not use previous films as a base. Current Batman definitely wouldn't fit into it. Even the new, unreleased Superman isn't going to be part of it.
