Got shin splints in boot camp, shits the worst. But they just used an ace bandage on it, said to rest and threw some ibuprofen at me. I was good after about 2ish days of doing next to nothing on it and icing it over the bandage.

There's ankle / calf stretches you can do to prevent it. Just do it every time before you exercise.

or you can also stand on one leg and with your other leg in the air rotate your foot clockwise for a few rotations and counter clockwise for a few rotations.

I remember this well because after I got my shin splints my drill instructor made me do this before doing anything, even going to the bathroom, to humiliate me for getting two days of bedrest during boot lol...

I think you could get shin splints, but I think the problem may be related to what ghostfaced mentioned. It's referred to as Lace bite, or could also be me just having my upper laces tied too tight for how hard I'm skating and its just causing pressure on those muscles to the point where they are sore now.

ya it's the same reason shin splints are common in boot camp, wearing your boots laced up too tight, sometimes it takes awhile to find the right amount of pressure to be comfortable - because loose skates / combat boots can cause shin splints as well. fuck up your ankles as well.

I'd hope this wasn't directed at me, since I did suggest something based on the symptoms that you are exhibiting.

Oh don't mind me, I don't show my opinion that often, more just add on commentary to what people say.

Ice is for swelling, if there is no swelling then apply heat. Studies have shown heat increases blood flow which in turn speeds up the healing process.

Most likely is it a tendon or ligament. So it is most likely related to the fit or style of your skates.

I do a lot of cycling and every spring when I start up for the season it takes a bit of adjustment to fit me to my bike to the point everything is ok. I get pain in either of my knees, so I have to adjust things to figure out exactly what is doing it, anything from seat height to cleat position on my shoes can cause knee pain. It can be a very minor change to cause the pain or eliminate it.

I don't really want to add much to what everyone else already said except that if your skates are brand new then that is a hugely contributing factor. The area you circled is right about where those skates should be coming up to.

That also is caused by the pressure that the area will feel when you're pushing off your skates. I'd examine your skating technique first and see if that's contributing. It's probably just on the one leg because it's your dominant leg. Push off with your other leg and use that one more and if you develop the same problem you may want to change how you skate.

Otherwise, you need to stay off the ice immediately and let your leg heal before you make it worse. Shin splints or compartmental syndrome are not something you want to develop or aggravate.
