I don't have the requisite knowledge in this field to attempt to prove or disprove anything. All I can do is present information. Perhaps others can provide some answers one way or another, but those with said knowledge remain quiet so I suppose it'll just stay a mystery.



The dynamo theory was the only thing I've heard on this, from what I've followed casually; and it makes a good deal of sense, so I've not questioned it. The only real question I have with the dynamo theory is why ours is still working, and why Venus and Mars are not. Until we actually know the makeup of planetary cores though, that won't be answered.

I'd rather have them doing this then going to the moon.

If they were researching on nuclear fusion or something, I would be happy...but global warning... I don't know. In the end, it just means less money for research, and this is never good.

NASA doesn't really dabble in that.


The government's nuclear power wing is controlled by Naval Reactors, which has the cradle-to-grave responsibility of nuclear research and power operations. NR is controlled by the overall authority, the National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA. NNSA is a part of the US DoE, and funds projects such as NiF, being built at LLNL's facilities. NiF of course being one of the two major fusion projects coming online within the next decade, ITER being the other. The US is one of the partners in the ITER project, via the ITER Project Office hosted by ORNL.


As one can see, no NASA involvement. NASA's mission directives are aeronautics, exploration systems, science (application via the exploration of the Earth to chart discovery routes, not open ended), and space operations. As an example, if you look into NASA's job/career listings, nuclear engineers aren't listed.

True, but my comment was more along the line of "more money for nuclear research, less money for space exploration", and not what the Nasa should do with their free time.


I always assumed the moon project was going to be additional money to the NASA over what they already have. I figured it would be easy to redirect that money somewhere else.
