1st significant death since my gramma in 05
I was actually pretty depressed for a little while today.
tbh I wonder how they found his reclusive dead ass
Catcher in the Rye is one of those novels that is oddly becoming less and less relevant to young people.
fags
lol
Yeah, and people who think that totally missed the point of the book, which is sad. The kid's fucked in the head because his brother died and he thinks its all on him, every time I hear someone say that Holden is just a whiny bitch, I honestly want to just fucking stab them in the face.
I always thought the point was that hes going back and forth between becoming an adult and staying a child.
Well, that's part of it, I guess, but a big part of it is Holden feeling like he's let everyone down, hence the title 'Catcher in the Rye' because he feels like he's supposed to be 'catching' people from running off of the cliff, and that he is failing to save people, mostly initiated by the fact he was unable to save his brother.
hmmm I liked the idea that the children represented his innocence. Obviously, your conclusion is totally valid, but I just never really saw it that way before.
I mean, think of how many of his fantasies are about him being some sort of heroic figure, the one where he pretends he was shot in the gut, or being the owner of a homestead with a beautiful deaf mute woman. He fantasizes about being strong and dependable because he doesn't think he already is.
Those are traits associated with adulthood/maturing too =x
When he leaves the school, there's one scene where he talks about throwing a snowball, but ultimately doesn't because he doesn't want to change the pure snow.
And when he's crossing all those streets and talking to his brother to help him get over the street. The street symbolizes the line between child and adult and he's worried about crossing it.
There's more stuff, but it's been quite awhile since I've talked about let alone read the book.
That's why the ending is so great, because Pheobe saves him by treating him like he is her hero, and that human contact starts the healing process. It's pretty well symbolized by the fact that she takes his hat off of his head, and puts it on straight as opposed to backwards as he wore it throughout the novel. She literally puts his head back on straight.
