A lot of the scenes that represent sex contribute to it too because having sex is "becoming a man."
He hates hearing about his childhood friend having sex with his roommate because that means an image of his childhood has been tainted.
Having sex in the baseball metaphor is hitting a home run, and he's the "catcher" preventing that from happening. Also, the only one who has a hat backwards on a baseball team is the catcher, and he is always turning his hat around.
I've wanted to read this every since Mel Gibson just had to keep buying it everytime he saw a copy
