It's almost time to start honing your rocket-sliding skills. Sega has announced that a playable demo of its over-the-top Platinum Games and Shinji Mikami developed shooter Vanquish will arrive on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PSN Store on Tuesday, August 31. Europe will get the demo a day later on September 1, with Australian gamers getting their hands on it Thursday, September 2. Famitsu reports (via Siliconera) that Japan will also receive the demo on the 2nd.
The "Vanquish Official Demo: Velocity Attack," as Sega calls the demo, will comprise the section of the game we played at E3 -- a space station interior with bipedal "Walker" mechs to commandeer and an enormous spider-like robot boss to defeat in incredibly stylish ways. (You know, the usual stuff: by grabbing the monstrosity's missile out of the air, turning it around and throwing it back like a giant lance.)
Demo is out today.
Played it, its basically just a boss a few underlings, it was decent, I wont be getting it right away.
It took me a couple deaths to get used to the boosting thing. The boss fight was fun and I expect the other ones to be even crazier.
yea i had fun trying to figure out the timing of everything and the boss was pretty awesome for a demo boss. If they have multiple ways of destroying each boss i will buy this for sure
That was awesome! Spent an hour dying over and over (I have lots of free time) max level for guns is 10 and grenades is 6
Shotgun at level 10 is insane!

Platinum Games is on a mission with its upcoming shooter, Vanquish. In the wake of the disappointing reception offered to the third-party PS3 conversion of its last title, Bayonetta, the developer has switched to the Sony platform as its lead console.
"The PS3 is kind of like a sports car that's very high-performance and specific in its usage, whereas the 360 is more like a car that everybody's driving. It doesn't have the same range as a sports car, but it has more versatility," producer Atsushi Inaba told VG247 during E3.
"It's about adapting your game to those two sorts of different framework. That's where we're focusing. Fundamentally, the gameplay experience itself is the exact same game."
The recent release of playable demos on both PS3 and Xbox 360 allows us to put Inaba-san's claims to the test, but whether the results of this analysis will remain relevant in the context of the full game remains to seen. The content of the demo is said to be exclusive, and it appears to be very similar indeed to the code seen at E3.The key difference seems to be that the Xbox 360 goes for a conventional capped 30FPS, double-buffer approach (losing v-sync when dropping under the target frame-rate in order to maintain fluidity) whereas the PS3 game employs triple-buffering, effectively ensuring that there is not a single torn frame any time during the gameplay experience.
The Xbox 360 version feels a touch more responsive, but whether this is down to the double-buffering or a slightly higher average frame-rate is something we'll need to take a look at in more depth with the final review code when it appears.
It's also worth pointing that while the tear-graphs in the video suggest that the tearing is a problem on 360, the neutral colour schemes combined with minimal lateral motion make it far less noticeable than you would imagine.
As it is, both demos operate at the same rendering resolution: 1024x720, with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing. Aside from minor differences in the shadowing implementation, the rest of the game's many and varied post-processing effects and its object and camera-based motion blur appear to be effectively identical.
With Platinum Games handling both versions of Vanquish, it appears that PS3 owners can breathe easy after the Bayonetta debacle: this demo is excellent fun and technically solid on both platforms. Indeed, it may well be the case that the addition of v-sync could give the PS3 version the edge, though further testing on response and performance in like-for-like situations is clearly warranted. It'll also be interesting to see if the presence of screen-tear on 360 has more of an impact in different environments.

1UP reports that a second Vanquish demo will soon be dashing its way to consoles. The announcement was made by director Shinji Mikami and producer Atsushi Inaba during a stage show at TGS. The demo is set to offer a challenge mode, designed to provide a more challenging experience for skilled players. The new demo will arrive in Japan on September 22. We've contacted Sega to see if it will also see release outside of Japan.
Played the demo, fun as hell and well paced even if I was only just getting used to it. I imagine it will be a ton more fun when you get better and especially at a higher difficulty.
Up on jpn psn right now for those who want it. Can change language settings to English so it works perfectly.
Damn this is tough
It took me a good number of tries to beat the challenge.
Wave 5 is no joke because you're forced to fight the big gray mecha, the 1 that spawns in wave 2, that missile spam like a touhou(?) game. I had to bait them into attacking me in order to kill them.
They should really bring this to the eu/na store for more people to get their ass kicked by this.

this seems like one of those games I'll get after reading reviews about how amazing it is. I change my mind on about half of the games I don't like originally lol
What demo were you guys playing?? the game feels cheap like saboteur and dark void and will likely see a $20 price drop within a month of release. It's gonna be a garbage release, be prepared...
I didn't get that far but I stopped playing after about 15 min. I'll try to finish it later.
Also, I don't think the Western stores would get this for fear of people getting turned off because of the difficulty, not knowing it's a challenge level. (Despite it saying so)
I don't think it feels cheap at all. I think the controls are solid, the shooting is good and I like the little things (like how your gun reforms in your hand when you change weapons). I was the least interested in this when seeing the previews, but now I think I would get it. Dunno bout 60 dollars though. I didn't like it THAT much.
Took like 4 tries, not counting me acting like an idiot for 2 or 3 runs testing stuff. 12 min ish. Really fun.
I don't like how expensive Melee attacks vs how useful. Should just cost a lot instead of 100%(machine gun aside). Struggled a little with controls, still getting used to it. Right thumbstick not being reload drives me crazy lol.
Tips: You can kill the entire first wave with three grenades. Save at least one or two of the mechas you can ride for the 5th wave.
EDIT: More: the mech guys have a weakness located on their back. You can make them explode quickly if you shoot that. If they are carrying flamethrowers it is very easy to blow up the tanks. If they have that missile backpack then they basically have no direct weakness, BUT you can shoot that giant missile they shoot near them and kill them instantly. Failing that shotgun owns the fuck out of them.
The best way to get rid of the guys riding the walker-type mechas is to use that weird four-shot gun with auto-aim from afar. I forget what it is called. One is located near where the first wave spawns.
If I could change this game in anyway... it would be having your reactor core recover faster while shooting people out of cover and melee attacks take about half as much reactor core power as they do.
EDIT: Oh and using an enemy's body as a shield while you boost around - except done ridiculously awesomely rather than the way MGS does it. And maybe throwing enemies into rockets as they fly at you.
...okay, I'll stop now.
It is an awesome game.
EDIT: But I have my doubts hard modes will be fun to play. It will be too cover focus.
Also fuck yeahhh. Amazing video. No idea you could even do some of the stuff he does in here.
