    Isn't faking your own death actually illegal? Or is that only if you're doing it to collect life insurance or get out of court sentences?

    It is not illegal in itself to fake your own death - that boils down to lying to people. But the overwhelming majority of reasons for doing it in real life are malicious and illegal - evading debts & taxes, hiding from court jurisdiction, and collecting on life insurance.
