ITT: Plow's never really worked with kids, and has a fisher-price level understanding of their behavior.

Kids learn to speak WAY before they learn what football is. Equating the mimicry that evolves baby babble to full language to a kid repeating the same process once he's sat in front of a superbowl ad is an incredible reach.

    I hope you never reproduce.

I'm not equating them, they're different levels of the same function.

It's a simple trait of humanity.

Seriously, you're just sticking your head in the sand here, this is fucking stupid.

Monkey see monkey do obviously came from the fact that monkeys want to piss off their hypocritical parents.

child psychology is a load of crap. And I've experienced way more kids than you ever will as a teacher/sub/tutor.

Don't get me wrong, it's possible kids will imitate guys kissing. But this is the same way a kid would do it from seeing bugs bunny and elmer fudd kissing.

Guess what happens when it happens? YOU BE A FUCKING PARENT AND TEACH THE KID NOT TO DO IT. (not because homosexuality is wrong but because kids shouldn't be kissing at like 9 years old).

And this is your problem right there, and what makes you a terrible parent. Believe it or not, you have to explain things to kids whats good and bad in life. "omg teach kids, no way that's a school's job!".

I'm with Sath, if you can't explain/teach your kids what you consider right and wrong, then don't procreate.

[edit] gonna add my own experience about smoking. when I grew up, until about 5th grade, smoking was still a norm thing to see on tv. You saw it all over the place. My mom smoked until I was maybe 8. I used to buy those cigarette gums to pretend I was smoking with the powdered sugar. And guess what? 100% serious I have never smoked a cigarette in my life. Because, omg, my parents taught me how bad it was. Even if I had smoked one, they could have still gotten me away from smoking more. Because they weren't lazy and said "we need to make sure she never sees people smoking!"

Yep, a 30 second TV spot during the superbowl is a far more influential part of a child's development than a lifetime of exposure to parental attitudes and behavior.

Lock yer kids in boxes until something on TV you find acceptable is on, adults of the world!

You're right, I shouldn't get to choose when I teach my children certain things.

inb4 "then don't watch the game!"

fuck that, there's no fucking relation between football and people randomly making out

if you know as a parent there's gonna be bad commercials during said game, there is a correlation for that game.

You do get to choose, and sometimes you have to choose to not let them watch the game so they won't see the commercials.

I feel like you don't remember what your parents did and didn't let you do/see. Or that they just let you run rampant.

I remember a specific play from a game that wasn't even the super bowl when I was like 2 years old. The super bowl has always been a huge deal for my family.

But when L.A. Law came on, it was gtfo.

My point is that I don't WANT there to be bad commercials during said game. Why the hell do there need to be?

    Ok first point:

    1. the superbowl for quit awhile now has had commercials geared towards adults. So in that vein, why the fuck wouldn't there be?

    2. If you want it to be kid appropriate, don't stop at guys kissing. Again this is complete hypocrisy to say that guys kissing isn't good for kids, but all the other beer/sexy commercials are.

    3. You don't always get what you want, and people today really need to learn that sometimes it's better to take action into your own hands, rather than sitting around whining you didn't get things the way you want it.

    4. really not that fucking hard to record it and take out the commercials.

    5. me saying what you can and can't do, didn't just apply to football you ding bat.

Why should there be? Pretty sure we've filled the thread at this point with reasons why there wouldn't be, without a single valid reason for why it's necessary, productive, or positive in ANY way.

And I don't stop at guys kissing. Did you not read all my pots?

Also, if there's beer around and they're old enough o understand it at all, I'm going to have explained it to them.

    3. You don't always get what you want, and people today really need to learn that sometimes it's better to take action into your own hands, rather than sitting around whining you didn't get things the way you want it.
I will take action into my own hands. I won't have them watching shows that aren't appropriate for them.

Why should I have to keep them out of one of the biggest days of the year, that has nothing to do with anything inappropriate at all, so that companies can put out more "shock value" ads, half of which aren't even remotely related to the products?

    4. really not that fucking hard to record it and take out the commercials.
Yeah, because the experience of the super bowl is all about recording it and watching it later.

    5. me saying what you can and can't do, didn't just apply to football you ding bat.
First off, I related it to something other than football, secondly, I *AM* talking about football, this whole thread is about football.

Do you see me bitching about the commercials during CSI?

Do you see me saying SNL shouldn't be allowed to air because kids might watch it?

It's like it never even occurs to you people that you might not end up being 100% perfect parents always able to control every single element that ever affects your children.

Or that there's no fucking reason at all to have stupid shit like that on during family events.

It's funny as well how this whole time people are accusing me of not being able to get past it because it's gay, when the reality is *they* can't get past the fact that it's gay.

We're talking about commercials, I mean, we're talking about commercials. Not a game, not a game, not a game, we're talking about commercials. Not the game they'll go out there and die for, not the game they're gonna play like it's their last, not the game, we're talking about commercials. I mean how silly is that, we're talking about commercials.

So it's ok to have a man and a woman kiss during family events but not two guys? What if the family is two guys and their adopted kid? What if it's a nice big 20+ person family huddled around the TV watching the game and one of the sons brought their boyfriend?

You presume to trivialize their relationship, love, and lives as "stupid shit" because you're stuck in 1950?

Out. Out out out out out. Back to your cave.

Naturally, not every kid is going to imitate what he sees or continue to imitate what he sees after it's been sufficiently clear that he should not imitate that. If people are concerned about their kids imitating anything on TV they should just do what a parent should do, explain the situation and tell them not to do it. Of course, what i'm saying is that kids can and will imitate what they see, like plow says, they won't imitate everything, and you can't exactly predict what they will imitate.

Since i am a psychology student, i can agree with Plow that it is true that imitation is a fairly vital and common thing for younger kids.

this just in, entertainment always has to be necessary, productive, and positive. Are you serious? Commercials are for advertising, if it's advertising something it's a valid reason to have a commercial for it....

And I don't stop at guys kissing. Did you not read all my pots?

Also, if there's beer around and they're old enough o understand it at all, I'm going to have explained it to them.
How is explaining this to them any different?

BECAUSE YOU DON'T DEEM IT APPROPRIATE. That is why you need to keep them out. That's what a parent does.

If parents disapprove of the lack of clothing on the little mermaid, don't fucking take them to Disney World, even if the kid wants it.

Yeah, because the experience of the super bowl is all about recording it and watching it later.
For a 9 and under year old, yes they're not going to see the difference.

First off, I related it to something other than football, secondly, I *AM* talking about football, this whole thread is about football.

I'm talking about what your parents didn't let you watch, not what you let your kid watch. I can say I'm 90 % sure your parents didn't let you do some things you wanted to do. Just because that wasn't football doesn't mean the world has to revolve around you so you can let your kids watch football without making the effort.

Debates like this make me want to kiss my boyfriend in public more often, just because I know there's nothing wrong with it and I know it makes some really insecure people really uncomfortable! Feels good, man.
