Why are you looking forward to FF14?

    Honest question.

Most if not all of you played teh trainwreck that was 11, so why are you thinking that SE possibly may get it right this time?

not trolling, not bashing - i'm interested, hell i played FFXI for a few years. what's going to be different?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Really, against all the mistakes SE makes I feel they are the one company out there that will strive to be different than other mmos. Or at least not a "wow-clone"

Not to say that wow is bad, or that games do it on purpose or anything, but in the past year and a half I've gone through 5? mmos and it feels like I'm doing the same thing over and over again. FFXI is the only one that seems to stand apart (though maybe that's cause I played it so long, iono but it's my perception at least).

As much as I can be the first to bitch about SE, they do make a great game. FFXI is a great game, the problem is there are errors SE just refused (or took forever) to fix. It's one of the few mmos where I feel I can always be doing something at any given time.

Because of that, I have hopes that FFXIV will give me the same feeling of being different, and being always active. Of course this obviously might not be the case, but it seems like SE really takes their games seriously, so I have hopes.

I'm also always willing to try any mmo for a bit just to see what it's like. And outside star wars and star trek there aren't any major mmos that I can relate to, so I guess this one shines above all else atm.

Considering it was SE who laid out the tracks and the players caused the wreck, we'll see how FFXIV goes.

Main reason I am is because I played FFXI since release and it always felt like the one MMO that was different from the rest. Whatever problems FFXI had, SE did fix and most won't see it because it doesn't directly affect them the majority of the time (Biggest fix was the general mechanics of the game and making RDM actually useful). They also learned a lot between working on FFXI, Front Mission Online and Fantasy Earth Zero, it's evident with the release of WoTG and Final Fantasy XIII (when you play it you'll see). Speaking of which, FFXIV like XI was built from the ground up it wasn't using a borrowed engine from other games like most MMOs (though XIII and XIV share the crystal tools engine they built) and is being built on the PC first which allows for better coding (seriously, write to the PS2 sometime.) and above all a lot less limitations.

They got it right with FFXI, the community just got over spoiled and demanding and got pissy when SE didn't give or hell even got pissy when they DID give, FFXI wouldn't have survived 7 years if they got it wrong, MMORPGs that get it wrong die very quickly. So it's clear FFXIV has the potential to be the best MMO on the market for now.

Hell SE and FFXI has its problems, but so does every other MMORPG and media company but FFXI was far from a trainwreck especially in terms of a video game, but the portion that was messed up most was the community.

FFXI was good largely because SE didn't respond to every one of the base's silly demands.

People wanted to stop "monopolies" (aka. not wanting to work as hard as those who do sit around for hours), "fix HNMs" (aka. make Nidhogg pop-able by trading a Fire Crystal to a ???), and "stop RMT" (amazingly, they provided an increase in supply of the most demanded goods for the cheapest possible prices in return for selling gil, which was promptly bought by gil buyers who quickly stimulated the game economy through quick and massive spending).

FFXI's best features (not dumbing the game down) came from SE betraying its base. The only thing that could have made the game better would have been abolishing the R/EX system.

If I exclude the "more story, bigger world and all the obvious thing", my request would be:

    1) I want to *play*, not wait for my group. Fix the stupidly long downtime that were plaguing FFXI
    2) I want my effort to pay off for me, and the rest of my group. One item per group every 2 months (ie: ridill) led to drama and overly complicate loot distribution system....that's not where I want to spend all my energy. I want to design strategy, improve my skills, instead of dealing with people crying everywhere.
    3) Similarly to 2), gives a purpose to every single bit of the game, a real one. I like doing -everything-, but 98% of the player base want item progress and/or money. It's really hard to motivate people to do content that arent rewarding

Pretty much this. FFXI wasn't perfect but it definitely stands out from WoW and all the WoW clones out there.

Because I disagree with 11 being a trainwreck. If that's the case, then pretty much every MMO out there is a "trainwreck". That sounds silly.

I've yet to see a perfect MMO. People will bitch about anything. If it's not RMT ruining the economy, it's RMT sending you nasty /tells.

The grass isn't greener on the other side. Some may prefer a different kind of game, but as for me at least I prioritize new game experiences over more polished but outdated experience. SE is trying out new things, which works for their advantage and disadvantage. If they, because of this, can't provide features just as good as in other MMO's, or the new features are not perfect at the time of release, that's a downside I'm willing to live with- because I find it more enjoyable than redoing the same thing I've been doing for years again in a new game (or the old). If you think that SE should provide new experiences that are perfect at the time of release, while retaining every single feature from games that decide to copy the old methods instead of making up new ones, then keep on dreaming- it won't happen. You can't have the cake and eat it too.

Hopefully you get what I mean.

    good responses.

going from ffxi (which was my first mmo, if you don't count PSO on dreamcast) to wow, it was amazing to see that blizz devs and other ppl actually adressed issues in the game. ffxi could be the best game ever released, but if SE doesn't get the communication aspect down then it's probably going to follow the road of ffxi perfectly.

i want it to rock so hard that i can play it, but i'm leary of SE's customer service and the fact that apparently AV -still-isn't dead. that speaks volumes about the disconnect.

No point being a WoW clone...WoW will be a much better WoW with its 5 years in development.

However, many things (not always directly related to the gameplay) were executed perfectly, and trying to be different doesnt always mean better. They need to be smart about the direction they pick.

That's not really a disconnect, they just want people to figure it out, it's not a tweakling treant, it CAN be killed. SE does need to work on its communication, but since WoW is exampled, look at what communication does to a game. Players don't know what they want so WoW's balance go up, down, left and right like a pseudo konami code every patch.

Being different also means that if they don't have infinite resources to work with (unlikely!), some things need be left out in exchange for a different game experience. When all you do is take features from existing games you have much more time to polish other features of the game, like the UI. Even if they were to copy the systems used in other games, I doubt they'll be able to do it as well as those games already do. If that's unacceptable, then you'll most likely be disappointed with the game.

wow's biggest problem is pvp vs pve balance, and the devs have said straight up that they wish they would have never done arenas for just that reason. re: AV, the fact that no one has killed it yet the "right" way, basically means that SE is fucking with their playerbase.

you set a goal, then you make it hard (and hopefully fun) to attain. not impossible. that's what se doesn't seem to get.

i just want to know why anyone would want to throw 15 bucks a month at a company that continually snubs its customers. and i am a lifelong FF fan, have 13 on preorder and will continue to play every ff game that's not an MMO for life.

That depends on how you look at it. Does SE not tell us how to kill AV because they like to fuck with their playerbase, or because they believe that the playerbase can eventually figure out the way to kill it?

The last time I checked, AV had been gotten to like 59%(?) hp without any silly tricks (DRK's). That means it's killable, but there's still something about it that can't be figured out. It's not unkillable, although the method of killing it is not very practical.

It's pretty much depends on the attitude you have for SE. They want to take the game to a direction they wish for, and at the same time try to fill the expectations of players. This is also why XIV is Not a WoW clone, so saying it's solely a bad thing is silly. Some people prefer it this way, me included. Games that only want to fill the expectations of players are pretty bad, if you ask me (Aion for example). There's nothing really wrong with it, it's a solid product, but I've done it all multiple times before, so it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. This is the tradeoff we have to live with.

EDIT: Pretty much what Ksandra was talking about.

I would never expect a perfect game on release, but I can't say I'm willing to get an empty mmo where grinding xp is the only avaible content for the next 2 years. If I'm leaving WoW or FFXI to go play XIV, I want at least some promise that we will get something epic and soon, otherwise, I see no reason to make the move.

I'm not really worried about the first month or two, discovering the game will be fun (especially with epic graphic and music). It's everything after that worry me.

People who actually took the time to enjoy FFXI enjoys the game for what it is because there is beyond enough for you to do in this game after 7 years, those who CHOSE (yes its a choice) to sit their ass in Dragons Aery or camp any HNMs for hours on end, deal with a constant cycle of the "same old shit" instead of trying something new obviously didn't enjoy the game.

FFXI has A LOT to do, as I said before, the community is the issue, not so much the game. I played since 2002, so I can pretty much tell you they don't snub their customers, examples:

Dynamis - Upon release of this event you barely made out with currency (at best 50 a run), relic were considered the ultimate armor because it was so fucking hard to get. SE changed that very quickly then later upped the drop rates yet again.

Assaults - Low levels were complaining they couldn't do much because go figure, high levels only cared for themselves. So SE implemented a system where level 50s can do battle arena which of course, people turned into "must be 75 to do this!!!1"

Besieged - Players for the LONGEST demanded monsters attacking cities.

Campaign - Players again demanded monsters attacking cities and wanting to take part in the crystal war (Obviously not end-game players, because it has nothing to do with fafnir)

FoV - Players for the LONGEST demanded quests that give gil and exp, that's what FoV is. The generic "go kill x and get y reward" questline in MMORPGs.

Level Sync - Players always hated that they get friends to join but can't ever level with them unless they happened to have a job around their range, this solved that, yeah chances are you'll have to buy appropriate gear (like you had to before level sync, go figure) but it was one of many player demands.

ZNM - Players wanted poppable NMs for THE. LONGEST. TIME.

The problem is, once SE gives players what they want, they find something else to complain about or feel SE "Didn't fix" or "didn't fix well enough", which is why it's pretty obvious in FFXIV they pretty much got a handle on how they want to do things.

That is not what I mean. The game will not be empty, most likely the opposite, but features that WoW does perfectly like UI and whatever you think it does, will not be as good in XIV- simply because making up new stuff is much more time and resource consuming than copying the old. Are you willing to give up some of the more polished stuff for something new? If not, this game might not be what you're wishing for.

those who CHOSE (yes its a choice)
It's not a single player game. Saying that every choice are deliberate is pushing it . You can leave linkshell, you can find new friends, but let's face it, finding (or making) the perfect linkshell is nearly impossible.

Campaign - Players again demanded monsters attacking cities and wanting to take part in the crystal war (Obviously not end-game players, because it has nothing to do with fafnir)
Campaign is epic to you? Do you really feel the enemies pushing on your front line? People hate WoW analogy, but take Icecrown for example. As you progress through quest, the world change, you see both side fighting each other, npc fights with monsters in certain location...etc

Campaign isnt terrible to grind solo xp, but it didn't fulfil players request. It doesnt feel at all like a war.

ZNM - Players wanted poppable NMs for THE. LONGEST. TIME.
But did we want to take picture for 1h before? I'm all for popped NM, but is the system really good?

Not everything they done is bad, but the execution in many cases could have been much better.
