I'd say there's far more non-endgame content than endgame content. I'm sure he did just fine without sitting around town all day.
If you can entertain yourself many years with chocobo racing, pankration, ballista and leveling more jobs...more power to you. But personally, I think there is something wrong in your head if you considering these events a good "gaming experience". Go on steam and download the 5$ game, you will probably have better time.

All MMO's have basically shit for content. There are only very few things you can do end game wise. FFXI had Sky, missions, King Camping and added a few more after I left. WoW has raiding, dailies and pvp. Aion has....nothing (lol). L2 had some end game raiding and pvp. Those are the only ones im familiar with end game wise, but yeah. You make the most of what you can, but MMO's at end game are not about entertainment really, sad to say. They are about making you want to keep hanging on a bit longer. The entertainment with a MMO is there from lvl 1 to max level.

Why am I looking forward to FFXIV? Because it will be a solid base game. This is SE, and SE games have major thought. Double that it is a FF game, they always reinvent a system of battle, story, and gameplay in each of the series. Even going from FFX to FFX-2 which was a direct sequel, tons of stuff is different.

So this alone I have no worries, and FFXIV will be a fun/new/interesting experience for 1~2 months, for $60~80, cool. With nice graphics. But this is 2010, SE needs to step it up if they want it to last longer than the next generic MMO. As the FF:Spirits Within movie shows us, the FF name alone can't carry all the weight (FFXI too, kinda). We need continuous updates, and fresh content to keep interest. I know I'm not the only one who will quit at the 1st sign of "Oh job additions in 6 months, we promise". In this age of MMO surplus, we don't want to wait that long.

So some things I'll just wait and see, but I think the launch will be pretty strong. Considering the "competition" from last year/this year MMOs are very niche games that I've never even heard of from friends.

Aion isnt even 1 years old, FFXI had nothing but xping back then and 3-4 hnm. It's not entirely fair to compare both.

I agree most mmo have shit for content, but at least, endgame has the epenis factor that can't really be found in another game genre. If you're just doing casual content, there is very little a mmo can offer you that another game can't.

Unless of course what they like is the social aspect, which is the point I was making in the other thread.

I'll admit, though. I loved the Xping, so long as I played a job that didn't have a bias back in the day. I remember the month I got "rich" (enough to pimp out my 24-ish blm with like +17int gear) and joined a party with 2 other blms and out-nuked them by at least 80-100 a spell. The feeling of pride and all that was awesome, especially when everyone checked the gear out and was like "holy shit!"

Of course, you can get that in any MMO provided you work hard and hit the top of the plateau in terms of gear for that level spread, but those early days where everyone was young and impressionable were great.

I think every MMO has that. Where I used to drool over the one guy I knew that had full Drg AF and would hang around the crawlers nest soloing linking crawlers for everyone's amazement, WoW had those early level 50's that had Epic Mounts and would stand around in town on horseback with 40 people oohing and aaahing.

I think moments like those are what ultimately decides if a MMO is successful or not. Are there enough people interested in the game to legitimately have those kinds of "holy shit!" moments? FFXI certainly had plenty, and I would never in my life call the game any sort of failure.

I'm looking forward to some kind of moment like that in the new one, hopefully with me jumping around impaling things with a lance.

Really? I thought the beta ended less than a year ago, or was it just the NA beta?

Either way, the point I was making is that mmo rarely have much endgame for a while. From my understanding Aions has a few raid or w/e. How does it compare to ffxi endgame in the first years? The biggest complain I've seen is the low drop rate.

I'm not saying the game is better, I didnt play it, and NCsoft mmo are usually lacking, but the issue you have with the game are probably going to come back for every mmo you play in the future.

It's been out for about 5 months NA side. That said, Dark Poeta is the only reasonably accessible endgame instance available for most people since I don't think any NA server has taken Divine Fortress yet while many are also still struggling with forts in the upper layer. Though, the boneheaded 30m timer on NC's part didn't help that. Dredgion's hit or miss depending on how the enemy decides to fight you (be it legitimately or just by training you with mobs led by assassins). Each race has another late-40's instance, but the drop rates are indeed poopoo for the weapons from the boss.

Honestly, Aion's in a similar point where I viewed XI for a long time. There's potential, but the devs have to act on it. A popular complaint is the quest game dropping off around level 37 and grinding being the only real way to level. I also believe there's a genuine lack of midlevel gear to go after. Some would argue the Miragent/Fenril quest gear shouldn't exist since it's better than a lot of crafted stuff, but there's also a pretty big cockblock in that quest chain involving both an expert level craft and HQing a max level synth that can cost over 40 million per attempt depending on your server. And I don't care what the addicts say, that's way too much fucking money. But yeah, there's also other little niggling things like class issues, ganking, and often a lack of incentive for higher levels to help lowbies, too.

Overall, people who say they have nothing to do are probably the ones able to play 5+ hours a day or have a strong group of friends to not waste time in PUGs for the campaigns. NC's been dangling a 2.0 update with things like a graphics overhaul, areas with seasons, new skills, personal/legion housing, mounts, and so on, but at this point, some consider it vaporware not unlike new SMN avatars. The fact you can't access some quests without switching language packs is also pretty BS.

Why is it so difficult to understand that the people that prefer Wow over FFXI will probably not enjoy 14? It won't matter what SE brings to the table, to them. It's 2 completely different play styles.

Where Aion dropped the ball was in the fact that a lot of people that had no interest in PVP decided to try it and discovered a lack of PVE at level 50. Those people decided to leave which in turn hurt the PVP because there's no one in the Abyss(pvp zone) to fight. Having simply included more PVE instances at 50 would have, in my opinion, kept the playerbase high and would have lead to more PVP.

Now, i'm hoping SE learned their lesson and i don't think it will take very long to see if they have. The second i see world spawns as THE end game content, i'm out.

To Kaylia. Value of game content isn't for you to decide or dictate which is better.

Many people don't like the end-game aspect because it's mainly gear/loot driven. To compare non end-game content to a 5$ steam game is ludicrous because FFXI is still a MMORPG where you connect with players and progress on your character, whether it be fishing, crafting, chocobos and largely in part to storyline/missions.

Aaaannnd why can't taru ninja wear vests like in your sig? As Francis proved, vests make everything better.

On a serious note, this vanafest stream should give some info. Its simply getting too late for them to delay the beta without pushing the release into 2011.

Why do you think this? They've gone and stated that FF14 will have a fairly different playstyle as FF11 and they'll be different enough for players to still potentially be willing to play both games. Why are you assuming FF14 is going to be an updated FFXI?

I enjoyed the story and the world of FFXI, I really don't think that's something SE will do "worse" in FF14. I hated the gameplay of FFXI, I didn't at first due to ignorance, not knowing what an MMO could be and finding that out later. Now that I know how gameplay in an MMO can work out to be I want nothing more than to see something with the FFXI story/characters/world with smooth gameplay that aren't just major timesinks with the potential for a reward at the end.

Honestly with what I want from my ideal MMO I believe SE has a better chance of developing it than Blizzard, though there is still only a small chance SE pulls it off. If I thought there was no chance I'd enjoy FF14 I wouldn't even touch this sub-forum, it would hold no interest for me whatsoever.

I can't really comment/bash WOW, as i've never played it. From what i hear on my vent on a daily basis, it's combat is fantastic. I'm hoping for faster paced combat with the intricacies of XI, but i'm not holding my breath. The only gameplay footage we have so far hopefully doesn't indicate, and i'm sure it doesn't, the final product. I'm looking for progression with depth. What i don't want is meaningless quests for the sake of quests/exp.

I share your sentiment about being ignorant of what an MMO could be and i think a lot of people fit into this area. If i were to go back to XI now after having played other games, i don't think i'd make it to level 10 before i proceeded to break my keyboard. Well, if i couldn't reactivate my account that is.

At which point did I omitted mentioning the social aspect. If MMO is nothing more than an enhanced chatroom for you..then fine, but don't defend the content you're not doing it.

I can't tell you which gaming experience is the best for you, but when I only see 3 persons in pankration (in different pit), when I see that some ANNM/fey weapon are ignored since the first day, or that no brenner took place in 3 years, I think we can talk about "uninteresting content".

There's really no way to defend that. It is what it is - dead content, and some of it, unfortunately, was dead on arrival. No company gets it right with every idea, so there's no reason to rush to defend it like it needs defending.

Pokemon was fun for awhile, but people got bored of it, especially when it was revealed to have no tangible rewards. While everyone thought it did, however, it flourished.

Brenner was the same - those beaches looked like World War II on Hades when it first came out, with many hoping for a reward for the tournament-style system they had set up in theory, but 3 months later they were as empty as the idea pool at SE's headquarters, it seems.

I really liked Brenner, too. Another unfortunate casualty of a game that rewards you with gear and items so rarely that people froth at the mouth over the initial prospect of getting another item from somewhere, and rightly so. Once they find out that there's nothing there but the actual event, they scatter like rats from a sinking vessel.

You can blame the players, but it's human nature. People like to feel rewarded for the things that they accomplish, and from the things they participate in. That's just the way life is.

So I guess noone here plays Chess because you dont get a reward for it? Just sayin'.

P.S. In no way am I defending the fact that pankration and brenner were not generally fun, at least to me. I would hope people don't do that b/c its not fun, not b/c you dont get a gold star for being good at it.

If a game of chess took me a year to finish, then maybe I'd be a little miffed. Most games I played in the past were done in 5-10 minutes. Besides, I'm not paying $15/mo to play chess. Someone out there somewhere might be, though.
