It seems that the passport thing depends on who you ask. As far as I can tell, what Welt said is right, you don't need one IF you're departing from and returning to the same U.S. port, and your destinations are within Mexico, the Bahamas, or the Caribbean. That seems to be the only exception, and you still need your birth certificate. I think that's right, but I'll find out for sure when I call.
My friend who's thinking of coming with has to use her time off before March 15th, so I'm wary of trying to rush my passport. It says 3-5 weeks, so that might be enough time, but I don't want to push it. So we'll probably just do a cruise or a U.S. territory. Or maybe the Keys, she kinda wants to head there, but I've heard the beaches on the Keys are pretty rocky, which would be lame.
Puerto Rico really does sound perfect for what I want - chilled out, warm weather, not too much craziness. So I'll look into that more.
Thanks for the input, I have no idea what I'm doing here.
I'm telling you...Playa Del Carmen...
No passport though. Fuck me, I don't know why I let it lapse. I'll keep it in mind while looking for cruises though.
Thing is where in Puerto Rico, cuz San Juan is a major city. And you seem to want to get away from it all, city life will still be abound (In major cities) even if you are in the Caribbean.
lol at being a major city. Go to San Juan if you want to get away from the major city life. Just stay away from most all of the locals, as they are dirty, not friendly, and likely on meth.
I can't count the # of them that tried to mess with my GF and I just on a walk to go shopping at 1 PM in the afternoon.
If you want to have a good vacation in Puerto Rico, don't fucking go to San Juan. It's great if you want to visit there real quick and see some historical Viejo San Juan (which is really beautiful and I know my way around there like the back of my hand).
If you really want a vacation in Puerto Rico, go towards Vieques, Fajardo, or even as far out as Arecibo and Ponce.
There are plenty of places on the island to go to that are relaxing and beautiful. You're limiting yourself to pretty much one part of the city if you go to San Juan because there are so many dangerous parts you can go to (Like Santurce) if you're not careful.
I would never go to the dominican republic ever again. If you want to lay on the beech, it is the worst place to go. Youll be spammed by people walking up and down the beech selling over priced beads/trinckets more than your spammed by gillsellers in ffxi.
I would say that it depends on how much culture you want to enjoy while on vacation. If you want more, i would go for puerto rico, but if your after a chill spot i would go for the virgin islands.
Another beautiful spot would be Aruba. But i dont know how much that would run you as i borrowed a timeshare to go there. I would rank aruba to be the best if you want a chill place though. Noone spamms you for money while your just resting on the beach. The island is small, so you can get anywhere quickly. And, the roughest parts of the island arent really that bad. You definately wont feel as bad for the people you drive by as you would if you were driving through the dominican/haiti/or parts of peurto rico.... the down side is you would need a passport.
I went snorkling in Aruba and it was pretty cool. Relaxing. If you want to get down and party, I would absolutely avoid it though. Boring as hell for anyone 16-25.
Edit - The water in Aruba is ridiculous amazing.
I think it was Aruba which had one of the Pirates of the Caribean boats in the middle of the ocean. You can go scuba diving and swim through it like a real half-sunken ship. The water is probably like 50-60 ft around it if I remember correctly.
You can see straight down to the bottom, everything around you, even in 30-40 foot of water there...its insane.
ok, so no San Juan. it's sounding more and more like a trash hole. see other parts of Puerto Rico. good to know. I might just do an all-inclusive deal, but they seem like such scams. otherwise a cruise is still on the table. and my friend is pushing Key West but I really want to get out of the continental united states. and if we go in March during Spring Break, well fuck that.
I'd kill to go to Aruba. someday...
Oh nice, I found the name of that restaraunt in San Juan....
Tijuana's Bar and Grille....anyone been here?
PUERTO VALLARTA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, San Juan itself isn't a trash hole. It's just that there's only one place you can really go in San Juan unless you know your way around, and that's Old San Juan (because that's where the tourism is, and that is also where the ships dock).
If you imagine that San Juan is on a peninsula, then the good part is the 3-mile or so tip, surrounded by bad parts (again, unless you know where to go).
No we graduated a year + ago, but I'm going on spring break with about 12 college chicks.
haha nice, just don't come back with 12 college STIs.
