vista to 7 question

quick question about upgrading to windows 7 from vista.
atm i have windows vista ultimate (pirated) on my home pc.

am i able to upgrade to 7 pro? or would i need to get a copy of 7 ultimate to upgrade it.

also my laptop runs legit vista home premium, and just to be sure, i am able to upgrade to 7 pro correct?

upgrading will be done w/ the full version disks and not the upgrade disks.

vista ult will only upgrade with 7 ult

vista hp will upgrade to 7 pro

Microsoft says that Vista Home Premium can only upgrade to 7 Premium or Ultimate. But I could just not be aware of some way to workaround that.

ok. if i were to do a clean install. would it be possible to just overwrite my existing partition w/o formatting and losing my shit? think i read somewhere that it is, but i'm not too sure, need to make a decision soon though, as i can get 7 pro from my school for free with the MSDNNA alliance thing.

HP to 7 pro is a clean install. I had to do that when I got my student edition.

When you upgrade from HP to 7, you get the option to keep your old Windows files in the same partition in a new folder under C:\Windowsold I believe. It has all your program files/system files in it still.

If you have a lowered type of version you are obligated to formate afaik

so if you do Vista ultimate to windows 7 pro you need to format to do a clean install
