netbook or cheap desktop for ffxi; recommendations?

So my main computer (a 5 year old notebook) crapped out on me, and will likely cost quite a bit to fix. I'd love to get a new desktop for gaming, etc, but I can't afford it right now; probably several months down the road.

So I was thinking of just getting a netbook to hold me over with my computer needs untill then. I don't do any gaming besides the occasional FFXI atm so I'm not super worried about it. I would like to be able to play it without too many problems though. I can turn down graphics settings, etc, I don't care too much for now.

Any suggestions for something...like $300-$400 tops that could run FFXI without too many problems?

has a nice price but i really don't know about graphics type things and how ffxi might be affected.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Wow that helps a lot, perfect link thanks. That actually does look pretty decent. That would be this one http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=AS1005HAPBU if im not mistaken.

I was also thinking though..a cheap ass desktop could work as well. Maybe something along the line of http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Averatec...&skuId=9705018

Now I can't decide what I want hmmmm

Heavencloud answered my question perfectly with that link, but any thoughts are welcome

edit: hmm http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Compaq+C...693021&count=1 is decent and cheap also

whats wrong with your laptop? im sure unless its a major hardware issue, you could get it repaired pretty easily

After talking with both the manufacturer tech support and a local computer repair place, we're pretty sure it's probably the motherboard or even the processor that would need to be replaced. that + the repair labor costs would probably be 300 or more anyway so...

Thanks for the link too, still just comparing as many different setups as i can find before i decide what to order this weekend. Not much else to do after getting close to 36 inches of snow dumped on us <_<

that's a crazy amount of snow, i just hope you realize if you buy a netbook, the screen and keyboard are both super small and would likely make playing FFXI at end game more difficult

While true, its very easy to just use a USB controller. Unless you're a keyboard-only fanatic for XI. I rarely use my keyboard for anything but typing.

As for the screen being too small, I don't see that being a problem. As most people using a netbook for XI on-to-go shouldn't be concerned with screen size in the first place. If you actually need the viewing space, or the expanded compact keyboard. Then I'd suggest looking towards a laptop instead.

another thing that just popped in my head, while the review says it will run, remember that it doesnt touch on endgame, so while whitegate and what not was acceptable for the reviewer, dynamis and hnms may be unbearable, especially if you're tanking (i noticed you had PLD)

@pikarya I was a keyboard fanatic lol though i suppose you could use a full size keyboard via usb too

yea i only use keyboard for chat anyway
and i figure i can just use crappy, toned down settings when doing things with lots of people around (einherjar, dynamis, etc)

My old notebook wasn't that fantastic anyway (being over 5 years old): 1.7ghz pentium M processor, 1gb ram, radeon 9700 graphics, 80gb hd (lol)...all horribly out of date by today's standards. But I could run ffxi+trillian+ventrilo+firefox all at once with few problems. These Eee netbooks are basically just as good besides the graphics.

And this is temporary for ffxi anyway, till I feel like shelling out for a nice nice desktop.

I think I'm pretty set on the Eee...just need to pick out a color. Thanks for the comments everyone.

Nice to see people still remember that old blog post of mine. :D I haven't played FFXI on my Netbook much lately, but using a netbook to play FFXI while waiting for your new pc is a good idea.
If you upgrade the RAM to 2GB you should have no problems,. I just wouldn't try laggy stuff like Dynamis on the netbook. xD
