Is my TV too crappy to play PS3 above 480p?

A while ago, my old man gave me his old LG DLP TV. It's not awesome, but it gets the job done watching Comcast or playing 360. It doesn't have any HDMI inputs, but does support DVI.

I have an Onkyo TX-SR507 receiver with 4 HDMI inputs, and I've been using that with success as a hub for all my HDMI crap, outputting it with an HDMI-DVI cable to the TV. Works like a charm, and 360 games and Comcast actually look and sound great in our tiny apartment.

But my PS3 has issues. It won't work at all through the receiver, and when I try to hook it directly to the TV (via an HDMI-DVI cable), the highest resolution it will display in is 480p. This is making me rage. I've tried changing the settings on the PS3 with both the auto-detect and manually, and each time it will only display in 480p. Am I screwed here? Is it time to bite the bullet and buy a new TV?

    Thanks.

Ninja edit, tv model number is RU-52SZ51D.

From the specs on the site above:

    Hi-Res Component Video In - 2 (1080i/720p/480p/480i)

    Try a component cable.

Even if he can pass 1080 signals he shouldn't. If the native is 720 it means he'd be down-scaling the source. Better just to pass 720.

No, I'm saying try component cables to see if he can get a HD signal from that for his PS3. He can change the output settings to whatever he wants from the PS3. But set it to 720p to be sure.

    I know, I'm just saying don't use 1080, lol.

Thanks for the help, guys. I've actually tried ALL of the settings (1080i, 1080p, 720p just for kicks). Nothing works except for 480p.

But you're saying that with component I should be able to get 720? Just trying to confirm before I go out and buy something I'd otherwise never use.

That's according to the manufacturer. I'd just get something and a local easy to return store, and if it works then return it and get it cheaper off monoprice, lol.

Yeah if your TV has component inputs (red, green and blue ports) there is no reason you shouldn't be able to play over that. HDMI>DVI might be interfering with the HDCP handshake in your TV with the PS3 for some reason or another, that's the only reason I can think of. Well, that or the HDMI port on your PS3 might not be working right. But yeah, component would be cheaper than buying a new TV, and the picture should be comparable with HDMI (Although I don't know if component will be able to use the full color range and super white options in the PS3 video settings, but maybe.)

Alright, will try the component cable.

HDMI verifies to work, though. Looks fantastic on my monitor, but suffers from truly horrible monitor speakers. That's why I'd prefer to play it on the big boy tv, wife be damned.

    Thanks doods.

So plug in seperate speakers for audio on your monitor. You don't have to use the ones in the monitor.

Yeah, I've looked into different speaker systems for my monitor, but space is a real factor. My office is tiny, and putting a 5.1 setup is pretty much out of the question. I actually have a great sounding 2.1 system now, but sadly it doesn't have any line inputs.

I compromised and bought a pair of P21 Turtle Beach headphones though. I will look like a dork, but hey, the games will sound good.

Yes, but speakers wouldn't help solve that problem. *rim-shot*

Whatever, I'm kind of a big deal. Bitches can't get enough of my DLP, if you know what I'm saying.
