GuildPortal is pretty terrible.
Guild Portal is not something any prominent guild leader would be proud to use, and at the same time it is a guild host only, while Guildwork is also a social network.
On another know we are going to begin doing a daily release log of changes on the Developer blog @ http://www.guildwork.com/blog/ every night at 3AM PDT, so that anyone interested in helping out can test the new changes.
This is nice and all.... But can it see why kids love cinnamon toast crunch?!
Amazing! simply amazing
Would love to see a calculator for dmg, def, att.. etc for ffxi..
and maybe for other games?? wow? ffxiv? aion?
Stan and I will be making this compatible with the iPhone, Android and most Blackberry models.
What time zone are the event start and end times in? Will the finished site have ppl pick their time zone as they sign up? Will it automatically display the times corrected for the persons time zone?
This is what SE LS Community site should have been from day one... Great props to Stan and the team, looking forward to see this in action.
I work in the Localization industry Stan, when this is finalized and if you want the assets to be translated, feel free to get in touch with me. =)
Agreed, I use my own hosting. However, when comparing the functionality of this vs guildportal, I can't find anything this does that they don't. I guess the exception would be individual networking as opposed to how guildportal does it on a guild-level basis.. but I don't really see that as a selling point since boths main appeal are for MMO guilds.
Didnot test it, but at 1st look it's indeed a nice initiative Stanislav and his team seem to already have built into an amazing product (even if not completed). I can already say: "Keep up with the great job on this great project !"
I'm posting in this thread also for 3 other things:
- Security:
if i understood correctly, this kind of "portal" is supposed to host not one but several guild sites and from many different MMOs. So what would happen if one manages to crack through one guild site he/she want informations from ? What kind of informations he/she could grab and use for ?
- Longevity:
This project looks great and promising right now and until ffxiv 1st months of release. But then, what might happen later ? i mean when most team members gets their own real life priorities taking over this project, or simply quit. I mean also the financial aspect of maintaining this kind of giant project: if i understood correctly, this would be free access for most stuff, but then do you have a way to keep up with the huge bandwidth problems that may occurs if this "portal" gets expected success (looking at you ffxiclopedia.org) ?
- Moderation:
Regarding the shared features, like the events calendar, is there any kind of moderation/restrictions avoiding some guilds to monopolize an event for example ? Thinking about Exc monopolizing Dynamis-Xarca for X months straight a few years ago, which ended up with any calendar around completely useless, LSs simply mules holding the event.
I really hope won't need such "moderation" if SE finally follow Blizzard's model of putting all events instanced :S
Those 3 thoughts may sound a bit too early, but that's what i can post for now in trying to help this project team gets better.
P.S.: i also saw a few posts in this thread mentioning damage calculations. A shared feature like a damage calculator linked to inner wiki item databases may be feasible i'm sure within this kind of project (looking at the KillingIfrit calc as JAVA applet). BUT there is something important to my eyes regarding such calculators is the formulas used behind. Most users i see around definitely don't care about if those formulas are approximating the concerned game mechanics by more than 10%, which is ENORMOUS in my opinion.
So yes, a first step with the idea of "data crawlers" sounds very great to keep the methods and results parsed stored somewhere, so like 4 years later when an update "adjusting" damage formulas can be tested again properly (or with better new methods), and not by a single insane no-life guy wondering how the f... those JPs got those 4 years old formulas tested (where are the data and methods???).
GL with your project Stan and whole team.
Agreed. As much as I love calendars, and how effective they can be, something like this would just alienate certain guilds and users.
The purpose of the calendar function on Guildwork is simply to organize your guild - not impose restrictions on other guilds.
HOWEVER, you can make certain events "Public" so that other guilds can see what you're doing when. This way, if they want to be nice about it and not take your zone, they can. But Guildwork won't restrict them.
Security: There is no way another guild can get into your data, the only way if a very malicious hacker finds a way, but the chances of that will hopefully we very very low. We will be very focused on making sure everything is backed up and safe.
Longevity: This is not a side project, this is our real life and our future company. We have already dumped some money into it and on release will be dumping way more. We plan to hire employees soon after release as well if the site takes off.
Moderation: Public calendars are for reference only and require no moderation, any guild can put any event on their own calendar without any limitation. As for moderating characters and guilds are legit, in the beginning it will be community moderated with staff intervention, further down the line we plan to setup an automated system once we have the money to have revenue, because it won't come cheap.
Guildwork does not limit what events you can add.
The site detects your operating system's time and localizes everything you do. If you add an event in PST and your friend is in Japan, he will see the time relative to his timezone.
Guildwork actually does many things that guild portal can't, for one something people may not have noticed, but the rank system (not much public access to it) is completely real time and if you change ranks or specific permission the users effected receive the changes in real time.
All of our features are coded to stay fast and scale out, while from my personal experiences of using the competition was clunky and slow, and the ads were very poorly placed in favor of revenue more then user experience.
Our DKP system will be like no other, there is already no DKP system that I have ever found that is as good as exDKP, and Guildwork's DKP system will make exDKP look like trash. As I explained in the FAQ, I shouldn't be calling it a DKP system because we will be giving you variables and formulas boxes and you can make ANY system for your guild, and it does not have to involve points.
Will a guild's schedule only viewable to members or can anyone see it? Logic would say it would be better for stuff like Dyna if it was viewable for ppl on the same server to avoid clashes. But given the FFXI community, in practice it would be better if it was private as some LSs would use it to steal Dyna zone just to piss off another LS.
Could also be potentially used to steal ToDs but I'm sure LSs that seriously camp stuff would just put up fake times or not list camped mobs as an event.
This looks pretty nice, but I do have a question for you:
How tired is your cock from Therin riding you all day?
