Ideas for where to apply for a job at.

My fiance just moved here from texas, well actually about 9 months ago. She has a degree in business with concentration in accounting and its going on 9 months with no luck finding a job anyhwere. Her mom is actually covering her expenses at the moment while she's down here but she's fixing to cut her off so we're in a rush to find her a job now. She's applied to the usual accounting jobs, banks, realitors, tax places, and some clerical positions, etc..

can anybody think of an out of the norm place that would need accounting that maybe we havent considered yet?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

This may sound stupid, but has she looked at craig's list at all?

It seems to me most of the people I know in a similar situation that ends up finding a place does it by literally applying to everything on there.

Hospitals usually need Accountants/clerical people. Might also check state/city government positions, there are a lot of jobs being created to administer & monitor all of the stimulus $ that is being spent.

Well, if all else fails, she could just temp as an assistant accountant until she finds something better. Maybe go finish up her CPA on the side while she does it.

i'm not familiar with all the requirements, but i asked a homeland security guy who opened an account with me @ the bank i used to work at, what would be a good college/major for my little brother to attend if he wanted to get into the FBI/HLS/NSA/etc type of gov job.

dood surprised me by saying accounting. he said they are always short on the clerical side or something something pencil pushers.

this was like 2 years ago, and i've been meaning to do more research for my brother (he's 16 now). can someone please add some thoughts on 'how to get my brother into the fbi'. thanks!

on topic: yea not much help, but maybe she could look into gov't jobs, like the fbi.

Yeah, was just going to write that basically every corporation has an accounting department. Just look at the major corps in your town and look up the job postings on their website.

And a lot of corporations have remote offices in cities other than their headquarters. Many of those offices are not listed. Take a look around your town at the office buildings and see what names are on there. I work for a large company with many offices around the world. Our headquarters is in Cupertino but one of our offices is near Sacramento but most people do not know it. And yes, we have some of our accounting departments in there.

Maybe you can get lucky with finding a similar situation in your town.

A lot of accountants build resumes by starting their own firm doing things like consulting and private tax accounting, spreading word through friends and whatnot.

Obviously a job with a big firm is the best long-term solution, but she might be able to find smaller pieces of work (that will help pay the bills) by actually looking at smaller companies, even down to independent contractors and mom and pop places. Most small business owners aren't exactly accounting wizards, and I know plenty that can use a hand doing their books. She might try targeting places like coffee shops, bookstores, restaurants or other small business, and working on a part-time basis. She could offer very informal service for a low price. Look at it this way:

    1. Some money > no money

    2. Gaining experience will only help her resume get better, and lead to better jobs down the road

An accountant can definately find work through a temp agency (some othe rprofessions find it more dificult to find work in a temp agency). Its suprizingly regular work. After all, if the agency cant find you work... they dont make any money either. And, it also allows your wife to shop around. She can see how differant companies treat thier employees, and see which ones offer the best compensation.

I would definately check in with some temp employment agencies.

BTW: there is absolutely no shame at all in being a temp. Both my sister in laws were temp dental hygenists. They had offers to work not long out of college. But, the temp agency actualy gave them more money than those employers did. Now they have steady work, working at dentist offices which pay double the rate than their competitors would have. The time saved, finding a good job through a temp agency was fantastic for them. Who knows if they would have found their current employers without those temp agencies.

Its definately something to look into.

yea thats our outlook on this right now too, hell she's even resorted to substitute teaching while helping out at a mom and pop tax firm. so things are looking up, just not enough to live off of really. Just sucks but seems we have to postpone the wedding, never knew it'd be this hard to find a job for somebody with a 4yr degree lol
