While it may publicly draw attention to the habit, try wearing gloves? Could get away with saying it's cold since it's winter unless you're like in Hawaii. Would probably suggest something more form-fitting over like bulky thinsulate stuff if you go this route, too.
If your teeth are messed up, which is very possible with a habit of biting your nails, then you could get braces. My habit of biting my nails broke when I had my braces in. It was impossible to bite them, and believe me, I tried VERY hard.
Electroshock therapy.
Get a job somewhere where you work with your hands. The more shit under your nails, the less you'll want to bite them. At least in public.
I hope.
i carry around nail clippers on my key chain. anytime i get snags or rough spots i clip my nails. my problem is once i have a reason to start, i dont want to stop.
cancer
I can only stop biting them when the lady is around. Seems my self-consciousness can only fire enough enough willpower to stop when I don't want them looking terrible in front of her.
SHE MAKES ME A BETTER PERSON!
Maybe try to bandage them all so you can't get to it. I suppose that would be an alternate to wearing gloves all the time or chew gum?
Lots of good advice, I appreciate it. I have no reservations about getting them manicured, my only concern is that they are not long enough for a professional to be able to even work on. As far as getting braces to help, I had braces as a kid for almost 4 years, and luckily so far my teeth haven't felt any detriment from my gross habit.
Also, I already chew a lot of gum. And definitely wouldn't wear gloves with the consistency that would yield any results.
I bit my nails until I got braces (literally couldn't with the braces on). I know it's probably not a route you can take but I wore them for a year and when they came off I never chewed my nails off again.
Braces didn't stop me. Oh sure, I stopped for a couple of days after each adjustment, but they had no long term effect.![]()
What has helped me in the past was to carry around a small manicure kit. Unfortunately, my kit got confiscated when I had jury duty and I've been too lazy to pick up another.
I've been a nail biter since I can remember, although I wouldn't say I'm too hardcore with it (bite them down to where I would normally trim). It seems you're a bit more adamant about your biting so I'm not sure if this would help, but it's worth a shot.
Rub your anus with each finger after getting up in the morning. That should cure it.
But seriously, I did this a lot too. My roomies basically told me to start getting manicures every week so I would stop myself, and eventually I just didn't do it anymore. :3
I know someone who wrote "DONT DO IT" on the top of their hand and every time they brought their hand up to their mouth it helped.
To each their own.
Every time you are going to bite your nails, just don't bite your nails and be awesome instead.
I bite my nails, I work in a factory, parts I work with have oil that tastes like shit, I subconciously just keep a rag nearby that I can wipe my hands off with, and it doesn't help me stop biting =/
Edit: The bandaid trick does help, it's really annoying when you actually NEED the nail for something, but when you don't it helps, as long as you can handle the 'what happened to your fingers?' questions
Does anyone else pick at their nails with their other nails? I bite and pick and it's a disgusting habit. I'm somewhat self-conscious about their appearance, and I even recognize that it looks gross as hell. I just can't stop doing it. When I tried quitting as a kid I was told to put a smooth, small object in my pocket to rub whenever I found myself feeling the need to bite/pick or whenever I realized I was doing it subconsciously. I guess it worked because I quit as a kid, but started again after a couple months. It's so bad now that I'm obsessive compulsive about it. I'll even use nail clippers to clip and tear at my nails, often to the point where I start bleeding and it hurts like hell the next couple days.
