Depending on which system you got the particular rom/image for....
SNES - SNES9X/ZSNES
GBA - VisualBoy Advance
PSX - ePSXe
4/5/6 on GBA have bonus content, with a sacrifice in audio quality compared to SNES version, and a couple glitches in FFIV Advance (mainly regarding ATB). Same titles on the PSX are basically the SNES Japanese versions (difficulty-wise) with bad load times included. 7/8/9 are PSX-only so that's all you get to choose from for that.
http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/ a PS emulator for 7-9 you need to find the iso yourself unless you have the games.
vba.ngemu.com a gameboy advance emulator for 4-6 but again you need to find the roms yourself
www.zsnes.com
Will play all the good FFs in the range you posted.
Semi-hijacking this but is there a basic tutorial regarding PSX emulation? I tried to figure it out but seemed odd... it needed a bios which I found two of, NA and JP. The NA didn't load and the JP one loaded but when trying to load the iso it just stayed black
Edit: I would suggest FF IV on DS if you could it made the experience much better with the cutscenes including the extra one near the end of the game
I'm partial to the GBA version of FF4, but that's because I'm a sucker for the party-swapping.
Oh speaking of that, how does it affect the cutscene with the final boss? Did they just switch the characters with ones you didn't have?
Don't say 7/8/9 are PSX-only because 7 and 8 were released on PC too. Of course I'm not saying he should play those, because console versions are superior, but just pointing the fact![]()
I primarily would like to figure out PSX emulation for FF9, it even looks slightly better.
for playstation emulation you need a couple things.
first and probably the "hardest" to find is the PS1 bios. google that and for a good ps emulator use epsxe
then you'll need two other plugins for sound and something or other.
just go to this site: http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm
download *Pete's OpenGL2 PSX GPU plugin and.... you need the bios and at least the GPU plugin to even play anything. the sound plugin makes the game sound better but I don't think it's neccessary.
P.E.Op.S. DSound PSX SPU
whenever you download epsxe there should be plugin folders. just put all the petes downloaded stuff in those folders
open up the emulator and set the junk up
then for iso's. check out this site: http://snesorama.us/board/forumdisplay.php?f=21
has tons upon tons upon tons upon tons of shit. also, they have FAQs for everything.
I'll letcha know right now. FF8 will be buggy. PS emulation is overall buggy though. It takes a lot of re-working to get a few games to work like cake. and If you don't already have one I would buy a port for your computer so you can use a controller~
ummm.... I would also download an older version of espxe and the newest one. some games work way better on the old version for some reason. careful with using speed-boost and save-states. it can freeze the game and if you get bad timing, the save-state will be where it froze so you'll haveta start over.

Just use pSX if you don't want to deal with setting all that shit up.
You don't have to configure anything for that emulator, just download the bios and the image and you're good to go.
Oh just a heads up, if you want to play FF5 on the SNES you'll need to find a patched rom or a JP rom and patch it yourself. It's not too difficult. Just google FF5 rom, ff5 patch, and IPSwin, download IPSwin and follow instructions.
I just finished up a rage of these games on my own actually. FFV and FFVI are both very fun. FFIV was ALRIGHT. I would suggest the GBA version (I played on SNES and it was really out-dated, I'm sure they made it a smoother more convenient play on the GBA).
Edit: Oh and the FFV and FFVI I played were SNES roms and the gameplay was perfectly smooth. The problem with FFIV on the SNES was that it wouldn't tell you what stats the gear was increasing when you put it on (aside from DEF and ATK), you had to manually back out of the screen and check the stat differences. That was one of a few annoyances (nothing you can't play through though).
Play FFV on the GBA. Its superior in every way. I haven't given FFVI a try on GBA but the SNES version was my favourite until I played 5.
FFVI Advance (GBA) was pretty negligible on the extras. All it added was the Dragon's Den, which imo is an uninspired addition in the form of a long-ass cave requiring you to move 3 teams about to get through the puzzle-ly dungeon which includes beefed up versions of the 8 dragons, as well as the Kaiser Dragon end-game, which for my group, was a friggen joke. Beating said area unlocked another area which is basically a gauntlet of battles back2back2back of basically every monster in the game.
FFIV Advance's bonus dungeon is gigantic in comparison, with some fun character-specific scripted moments (meaning you had to go through it I believe 3 times minimum to see all their is and getting their gear from 'em), and FFV's bonus dungeon is gigantic and more varied compared to VI. I've still yet to beat V's bonus dungeon, mainly because I've yet to exploit the battle system to make my dudes gods, let alone not get my ass utterly raped by Omega Weapons.
ZSNES and Snes9x auto-patch roms, so there's no need to hard-patch it. The only time I hard-patch anything is whenever I want to see what a rom hacker did, or when I'm stacking bug-fix patches onto my rom hacks (though depending on the size there's a better chance I'll hex-edit them in manually but you get the idea).
DS emulators havnt really gotten to the point where they can play all games tho.
most FFs have major issues on ds.
as for a guide. go to www.emuparadise.org they have most emulators and guides on every step on how to get them running.
cuz yea for psx ur gonna need a virtual clone drive to read the image, and a program like deamon tools to turn most games(they come in zips) into a image.
so it can get a little funky.
