is the GTX 285 worth it still?

i see everyone commenting on all these radeons and whatnot, and im still stuck with my old computer parts that i haven't built yet. i have a BFG 285 OC+ that i got for free at my last job, but the box has yet to be opened. should i just sell it and upgrade to a more modern card? or can it still get the job done?

tbh, i just want to be able to play crysis on AA and max settings on a 1080p at above 30 FPS. im guessing, even 1 GTX 285 isnt gonna get the job done

Nvidia is releasing a new card in March I'd just wait for that.

i dont like to buy things new/new when it comes to video cards (or just plain technology at that matter) im impatient as hell, and i know the price is gonna drop a lot after the 1st couple months and another card comes around and takes over the scene lol. im just wondering if its still viable now or if i should just switch to a more modern/yet consistent card that's been released the last 4-5 months or so

Depends on how good your current computer is. As far as your video card it is fine.

Seems like my build, I've had no problems with the card. I have no regrets purchasing it a few months ago.

You built the PC I did back in February sort of. Same processor/power supply and then the non deluxe version of my motherboard. I ended up with a 4870x2 though because at the time it was a good deal cheaper than a 285. That being said, a 285 will play anything you throw at it with fairly high graphics so if I were you I'd just use that.

I'm running an i7860 @3.0ghz, 4gb of ddr3, a radeon 5770, and a 7200rpm 1tb drive and I can run crysis on max everything unless I'm missing a setting, at 1900x1200, with the random occasional hiccup, and by random I mean every few mins if I shoot it may sieze up for a 1/4 of a second.

the radeon 5770? i should go check that out and compare it just in case. its not crossfire? and you're able to run it like that with only a few hiccups?

If you still want some input... I paid $349 for my GTX 285 about 6 months ago (give or take) and while I should have waited a while for the DX 11 cards, I honestly don't regret my purchase at all. I was going from a 8800 GTS to this. The difference was fucking insane. I can now run every single game on in 1920x1080 with max settings and no slowdown. Crysis, Fallout, Batman, RE5, you name it, I can run it.

Honestly I'm looking at the games that are supporting DX11 now, and I'm not impressed. Hell, not that many games use DX10 now as it is. DX11 games will probably be even more scarce. If you have one already, I'd definitely say to keep it. Sure the prices may drop a bit when DX11 cards come out soon, but it's a very reliable card. I don't see having to replace it any time in the forseeable future.

how often do you run into hiccups yourself? you're only running 1 285? everyone i talked to said that it was blasphemy to run crysis on only 1 card on full settings, but i guess they were just overreacting. heh

Honestly, I rarely run into hiccups. Once in a blue my game will slighty (and I mean barely) stutter. I only ever played Crysis a couple of times. I tried max settings with everything, and didn't notice too much slowdown. I guess it was a little faster with lower settings, but this was with my dual core. I have quad now, so it probably runs that much faster. I saw no real reason to buy 2 cards.

Crysis IMO isn't even that great of a game. Sure it's 3 years old and it pushes shit to the max, it's kind of like an ultimate stress test, but let's be honest 98% of games are not pushing shit like that game. All the games I listed above, Batman, Fallout, RE5, Borderlands, bBioshock 2, etc. aren't nearly as graphically intense as Crysis.

I'll go ahead and say I'm not running a full 60 FPS at all times, but you really need to be a nitpicker. I really don't see the justification in spending ANOTHER $350+ for a couple more FPS. The games all run very fluid.

My GTX 280 I bought in Oct 08 still runs everything I throw at it at 1920x1200.

Haven't really been any demanding games recently like Oblivion was when it came out.

It is not in XFire, only one card. Price wise it is less than the NVidia equivalent, benches better, and it supports DX11 (not that dx11 is the selling point, since nothing really uses it atm) I'd say aside from the video card your HDD speed will bottleneck the game if its too slow because of all the textures and such that the game has to load.
I usually am an NVidia fan, all my older cards are nvidia, but pricewise and future value/usage the radeons have the edge atm. Only thing to worry about is getting drivers that work properly with the card. I had to go down to the 9.x series drivers because the 10 series on win7 x64 gave me performance issues.

Exactly why I stopped using ATI. Every release seemed to make my card become worse and worse...

As a friend said to me the other day, with ati you have to wait until the new drivers come out to use the ones before it lol. however, I'd rather dick around with some drivers and get better performance out of my card, plus have more futureproofing, and pay less.

285 is still a good card; might get some drops at 1920x1200~ as its only got 1GB. If you're wanting some awesome setting at resolutions like that you'd probbably need to SLi, but then youd need to deal with all the profile crap and patch drivers with new profiles for games etc. Never had much of a problem myself with SLi, but i've heard horror stories.

285 is still good if you dont want to go ATi.

The GTX 285 is a perfectly fine choice for gaming and its direct competition of the same generation (the Radeon 4870/4890) can't touch it. Naturally it's going to be at a disadvantage against the 5870 on a number of levels - power efficiency, heat levels, overall performance, next-gen features (DX11, multi-monitor resolutions, HDMI etc.) - but for gaming today and for some time into the future it will do the job you ask it to.

With a GTX 285, you might be able to put most settings at 'high'

However, if you want max settings (very high) at 30fps, you'll probably need a 5870.

I have a 5870 1GB, and I can run Crysis at 1920x1200, 8X AA, and all settings at 'Very High'
It gets between 30-45fps combined with my Phenom II 965 at 4GHz
