I agree that updated curriculum. Frankly, i feel that all schools need a more demanding curriculum. But, this really isnt about the set curriculum. Apparantly the students are having a hard time dealing with the curriculum as it is. Is it the teachers fault or the students fault.

Well the superintendant only has power over the teachers. So, her solution will be to target the teachers. I remember the proposed solutions that the superintendant wanted to introduce. Not one of her demands were far and above what teachers in this area are expected to do. They were things like spending lunch with the kids, staying late to provide additional assistance, manditory planning meetings, and so on.

I would go as far as to say that the superintendants reforms are rather standard for this area, thats what my wife says and she teaches at the middle school level so i am inclined to take her word on it. I actually find it hard to believe that this school even tries to operate without these 'reforms'.

Regardless, the union faught these reforms and lost. I hear that the school is going to rehire some of the teachers though. Not the majority, but some.

It's a possibility yes.. up to 50% of the staff could be rehired. But they would have to re-apply for their jobs after the school year ends.

You gotta be real stupid to fail at public school. With how easy they make it after No Child Left Behind or whatever was put into effect. It is just shocking that we have people in large numbers who fail.

Anyone who tries to lay the blame for a failing school system on one part of a multi-faceted issue is just stupid. What exactly are you supposed to do with a classroom full of kids, half of whom can't even understand English well who should be learning the material from 2 grades back? Chances are their parents didn't even graduate high school as well so the issue goes much, much deeper than what the teachers are (or are not) doing.

Should've stayed in New Haven, city government + I'm guessing Yale (cause of sheer cost of the building renovations/construction) just finished off a 10 year reinvestment program into the public school system.

New Haven is a shithole honestly and their public schools have a horrible rep. Yale has little to no effect on this. There is ONE good public elementary school in New Haven which is in the area where the Yale grad student housing is. However even if you live in the area you're not guaranteed entry. I worked at Yale in New Haven (and am now at Brown in RI) and every person I knew there who had kids didn't live in New Haven and commuted long distances so their kid wouldn't have to deal with that public school system. When I moved there my daughter was 4 and options were terribad public preschool for $380/month vs private day care for $1066/month. I chose day care because I felt that strongly about not exposing my daughter to such an environment at such an early age. It's much easier to find good neighborhoods in RI that are close to work. Providence public schools are pretty crappy but there are a lot of good school districts in the surrounding areas.

The same kind of people that lobby to keep advancements in specific areas from happening because it will affect thier "Bottom Line" or thier job security. It happens in every area of our society. Its not about evolving or growth as much as its about money nowadays. Basically, for every advancement that is created, there is some lobbyist for a company that runs the risk of being outdated or outsourced, or eliminated. Years ago Chevy built electric cars that were super eficient, and it was killed and kept under wraps because people in the higher ups were concerned with profit margins and the cost to update plants affecting the bottom line.

Seconded.. I also moved to RI from New Haven (grew up in Hamden) and can attest that it's a shithole. As far as Yale helping the city try to improve the situation, it's about damn time. Walk 2-3 blocks away from the campus in just about any direction (str8 up Whitney Ave. is maybe the only OK spot) and you're in the projects.

As a product of the two of the surrounding area's school systems you can find decent stuff thats ~10min from New Haven/Yale, but yeah some of my moms coworkers at Yale lived in Guilford/Madison or off in Fairfield County for the schools. I will agree that its hard to find a decent public school in NH. IDK if this is the school you were talking about but there's an elementary school on Whitney Ave that's sort of nearish to the more research oriented parts of Yale where a family friend's kids go that they seem pretty happy with. Good luck in Providence, I guess you will always find great elementary schools in the areas where the college folks who work in the local cities's major college live.

Yeah it's called Hooker School (seriously - I couldn't make this shit up). That's the one off Whitney but it's a bitch to get into even for people who live in the district because everyone wants their kids to go there.

At any rate, I settled on living in East Bay here in RI, nice community with good schools and lets face it.. It's a tiny ass state - doesn't exactly take long to drive anywhere here.
