So let me get this straight. Maybe someone can help me understand this. Why, in a game you are trailing by 2 runs at home against the Red Sox, with 2 outs, do you bring in Javier Vazquez to pitch to one man? Did someone not tell Girardi that his win probability at this point is around 2%? What good can come from bringing in Javy in that situation? Does he want him to be embarrassed? Give him an excuse to not throw him against the Mets?

My conclusion: Joe Girardi has officially lost his mind.

haven't slept really, but watched the reairing of Sox/Yanks (I was watching HIMYM/Chuck/Playoff game last night) and watching the Yankees celebrate the walk off always gets me. It's times like those that makes me miss Little Leagues. Those guys may make millions, but to see them really enjoy a walk-off like that is something else.

Hanley Ramirez is brilliant. Here's what he said last night.

Wes Helms, Florida’s veteran clubhouse leader, says Hanley Ramirez needs to apologize to his teammates for dogging it on a play last night. Hanley told reporters he has no plans to apologize.

But Ramirez said he is angry about being benched. And he has lost some respect for manager Fredi Gonzalez.

“It’s his team. He does whatever he (expletive) wants,” Ramirez said. “There’s nothing I can do about it. It’s brutal.”

Asked about his ankle, he said: “That’s OK. He doesn’t understand that. He never played in the big leagues.”

“It has happened a couple of times. It’s been under the table so I know when I’m angry.

Jimmy Rollins got benched before. Does this show it can happen to anybody?
“It can happen to anybody.”

What happened on the play?
“I wasn’t trying to give up. That was the hardest I could go after the ball. ”

You know how fast you are. Because people watching on TV might not think you were going as fast as you could have.
“That’s fine. I can’t control what you can think about that. I can only control what I can do on the field. I know some people are gonna think I gave up, some people will think he was a little bit hurt.”

Is it this one incident or are the several incidents through the years?
“A couple, a couple.”

Do you respect Fredi?
“I respect everybody. But I don’t know if I get the same respect back.”

Does it hurt you to hear some of the things he said?
“I haven’t heard anything but I got a couple of phone calls they told me. It’s fine. I don’t want to hear what he says … Hopefully, I keep talking to my kids. They don’t keep me down. I’ll forget this and go forward.”

Helms has never seen a player dog it like that. He said Hanley said nothing to anyone on the team after he was taken out of the game.

“Everybody is entitled to have a bad day, no matter who you are. Everybody has a bad day. But I don’t think a bad day comes from not hustling. That can’t be stood for. When you’re having a bad day, you can still hustle.

“To just flat-out not hustle, that’s one of the things, I can’t cope with that. That’s one of my pet peeves. I can’t stand two things in baseball: Guys who don’t hustle and guys who don’t work. We’re trying to go to the World Series here. We’ve got to have all 25 guys on the same path.

“I can’t overlook it. I know people say that’s just the way he is. But you know what? That’s not the way it is. That’s not the way the game’s supposed to be played. And that’s what we want from Hanley.

“We want him to be that guy that goes out there everyday and we can sit back and says that‘s who he is – he’s the one who goes out there everyday and busts his but and does anything he can for this team. That right there will earn the respect of not only his teammates but everybody in the league.”

Does he have to come in here and apologize to everybody?

“It would be good. I know I would. It would be good to hear it from him.

“I was in Atlanta when the (John) Rocker thing went on. He was made to do the apology , but when he apologized to the whole team and held a 30-minute meeting, it gives you a little sense of easement. Kind of puts it to rest a little bit. Because right now when you don’t hear that, there’s still anger built up inside of you.

“One of the best things to cure anybody is to talk about it. It would be nice. It would be.”

FREDI GONZALEZ
Manager Fredi Gonzalez met with reporters this morning.

“Hanley is not in the lineup. I think he’s fine. Im sure he’s a little banged up but he’s not in the lineup.”

And the reason for that is?
“I think he’s got to take care of some problems. Let me retract that: It’s not a problem but I think he needs to take care of the situation and when he handles that in the right way we’ll be fine. It’s one of those things that could be good.”

What do you want him to do?
“I think he needs to talk to his teammates a little bit. Whatever feelings he has for me are fine and dandy. We don’t have to get along but I think he needs to get along with the 24 other guys on his team and when that happens we’ll run him back in there. If he sets his ego aside, I think it will be good.”

Fredi said he spoke to Hanley at his locker. He was “OK.’’

Did he act as if he was going to heed your advice?
“Not sure, not sure.”

You don’t want a distraction like this, right?
“If it’s handled the right way, I think it could be good. If it’s not, it could be a distraction, it could grow into some ugly stuff. But let’s wait and see what happens. Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill just yet.’’

“We’ll wait and let this thing kind of work itself out a little bit. I think sometimes when ego gets in the way, when that ego kind of deflates a little bit and you see the forest through the trees, I think it’ll be good.’’

He said some unflattering things about you. He said ‘What does he know. He never played in the majors.’

“He’s right. But I know how to play the game. I played six years in the minor leagues and I know what it takes to play this game and I know the effort it takes to play this game and I know it’s hard to play this game. That’s it.

He also said ‘it’s Fredi’s team he can do whatever the ‘F’ he wants.’
“It’s our team. I’m just the guy that makes the lineup.’’

When Jimmy Rollins was benched, he came out and said Charlie Manuel was right. How disappointed are you in Hanley’s reaction to you?
“I’m not disappointed just yet. But that’s what you want to hear, so this turns around and becomes a positive. That’s all it takes, a little bit of responsibility. And we can take off….

“We’ll see how this develops. My job as the manager – as the ‘F’-ing manager (laughter), I guess – is to make sure that 25 guys play together and the effort is there. I can’t control everybody going 4-for-4 but you can control the effort.’’

Did he talk with you or just listen?
“He just listened and nodded.’’

Fredi said he did consider pulling Hanley off the field immediately after the play.
“To consider taking him out in the middle of an inning, there’s got ot be some kind of history there.’

He did say it has happened before, it’s under the table and he doesn’t feel respected.
“I got no comment about that.’’

How confident are you that he’ll …
“Do the right thing? 95.5 (percent)?”

Your other players said they liked the message you sent by pulling him.
“We taught that from the very beginning. You play for the team and the name on the front, not the name on the back… You wish they were all Derek Jeters and you don’t have to worry about that…. I have not heard a negative..

“We don’t want that in this organization, that kind of stuff – from A ball to the major leagues. We don’t want the game played like that in front of our fans.’’
