All indications are that the Mariners are looking for guys who can contribute immediately. Even though Montero might be a better hitter, if he's not ready to be a starting catcher the Ms would obviously prefer someone else. Since the start, it's one of the reasons why the Twins were the favorites to land Lee. The Ms identified catching and a strong bat as their primary goals for the deadline. The as well rangers apparently have a lot of talent in the farm system that they might be willing to part with and who might be major league ready by the start of next year.

By the way, how can you not feel bad for Cleveland if this trade goes through? Lolbron to Miami, followed by their #1 and #2 2008 Opening Day pitchers in NYC? Cleveland is easily the most depressing and miserable (sports) city ever.

IIRC, we have about $5mil of wiggle room in the budget as it stands right now. I do think though, the Mariners will have to pick up most of Lee's contract in order for the deal to work.

3:57pm: The Rangers will acquire Lee and Mark Lowe for Justin Smoak and three others, according to Sherman (via Twitter).

Heard this: SEA is kicking in $2.5 million in order to help offset the $4 million owed to Lee. In return, Texas gave a better package of prospects besides Smoak.

$1.5 mil + Smoak isn't bad for a team that desperately needs a #1 for the remainder of the season.

Radio just announced we are only responsible for $1.5mil of Lee's contract. 3 minor leaguers going alone with Smoak, of "little note", but we'll see soon I guess.
