Utley has more value than Howard does IMO, and it's not even close really

Look at Chase's numbers over the last 3-4 years, and then look at the position he plays.

Doubt it, Holliday would have (and I still think should have) won it if Rollins didn't. Even if Utley had an absurd September I don't think he would have beaten Holliday's numbers. Unless you want to bring VORP and all that into the argument and how Utley was doing it from 2B.

Newest thing on their blog is that Kyle Kendrick only striking out two over 9 innings is cause for concern. Funny, considering not long ago Halladay said he wants to get batters out in 1 or 2 pitches.

Moyer got scorched today. Like 5 runs and 8 hits in 3 innings.

How would Kyle Kendrick having only two strike outs not be a cause for concern? We're talking about a guy with a ML career K/BB of 1.45. I mean, yeah, he's a GB pitcher so he doesn't need an awesome K/BB to be serviceable. But if his K/BB does not improve, he's a bad #5 (5.14 career FIP). I don't see how having a low BABIP in 9 spring training innings is cause for hope.

He was pretty much a one pitch pitcher before he got sent down, which I'm sure 99% of those stats are from. He's had a lot of time to work on his off speed and breaking pitches. If he's effectively getting the ground ball out I don't see any reason to be concerned.

Are you going to tell Tim Lincecum he needs to get more ground balls instead of strike outs? I know that's a poor metaphor but it should get my point across.

The point is ground-ball pitchers have to rely more on BABIP, so low strikeouts aren't ever really a good thing. It does mean less for a groundball pitcher, I think Ensam is warning you not to get your hopes up when his BABIP returns to normal levels.

And as far as the stats being before he was sent down, he has a 3.9 K/9 last year in AAA.

And yeah2moss, babip = money stat. Ground balls are awesome because they give less XBH obviously. You're still looking at a ~.300 BABIP, plain and simple. And if he has a horrible K/BB rate, that's a lot, lot of base runners.

Kendrick is basically a worse Carlos Silva if he doesn't improve his K rates.

I used Linceum as an example(didn't say it was a good one), not to compare the two players. If a pitcher is getting outs effectively then why ask him to do it differently?

Because Kendrick does not get outs effectively.

I'm more concerned with Moyer than Kendrick. Kendrick is at least young and showing signs of improvement. If he is the #5 starter then he just needs to be serviceable. He throws a lot of ground balls and has one of the best defenses in baseball behind him. If we can get Adam Eaton a world series ring, Kyle Kendrick can become a serviceable back of the rotation starter.

Yeah, I'm not saying Kendrick is completely useless. And whoever the #5 is and how good he is doesn't really matter, likely the Phillies are in the playoffs regardless and you don't need a #5 in the playoffs.

But the guy originally said that it was stupid to say it's a cause of concern that Kendrick is still not striking guys out. As he stands now, Kendrick is a #5. Kendrick raises his strike out rates = Kendrick becomes a better pitcher = Phillies profit. Kendrick stays static = Kendrick says a #5 = Phillies stay static. I really don't know what the guy was complaining about.
