I'd rather have Halladay - Hamels - Oswalt for 2.5 more years than Halladay - Lee for one year. Lee wouldn't have stopped Utley, Polanco, Moyer, and others from getting injured nor would be have been the answer to the huge slump the team was in.


I still see Howard being decent in 2-3 years. He's been losing a lot of weight and he's killing lefties this year while his K's are a lot lower. Another season of working with Bonds and I think that contract won't be nearly as bad as it's making it out to be.

The Oswalt deal wouldn't be so bad if not for the Cliff Lee cloud hanging over the team. That will always be a big puzzling issue.

They overpaid for Howard, but I'd rather see Howard in a Phillies uniform for as long as possible than not. Every year it seems like he's just sort of drifting and then all of a sudden he's got 45 HR and 135 RBI.

The Wilpon family can't be to hard off still after the Madoff thing anyway as they are in the process of opening a new wrestling promotion based down in Florida as well with some big names attached to the group already that would cost a good bit of money(granted not baseball type money but still a good chunk).

They also wanted to build/help build/ or buy the Islanders from their current owners and build an Arena next door to Citifield. They really are running the Mets like a Business and they don't want to invest anymore money. Some people believe that if they don't start investing money that the debt covenant guys are going to force the wilpons to sell the franchise.

If this is true I'm all for the deal. We won't have to give up our best A prospect and we will only be on the hook for $16 million instead of $40 million+. His health is a concern but if he can hold it together for a year and a half I'll be happy.

1:53pm: The deal is done, tweets Rosenthal. Piecing this together, it appears the Astros send Oswalt and $11MM to the Phillies for Happ, Gose, and Villar, with the Phils potentially adding $1MM to Oswalt's buyout but not exercising his option.

Quick bit of info on Villar ... 99 games played this year, 42 errors. Yowch!

Sounds like they made 2012 a 2m buyout instead, that's a lot better than 16m lol.

Good trade, not great because I think Oswalt is a tad overrated, but good for the Phillies.

They've really emptied out their farm system this year. Anymore injuries and that team is libel to implode. Good move i guess in the short term for sure. Big road trip coming up for the Mets taking the phils and braves both at home. It'll shape the division and the playoff picture that's for sure.

But really, gonna lol. A lot of people are going to forget all about the fucktarded move to let Cliff Lee walk, only to realize 'oops, it was a mistake' as they bring in someone worse for more. I actually liked Happ a lot.

Oswalt is due for some regression, his BABIP is the lowest it's ever been for him (.283) and his walk rate is a bit elevated. He's outpitching his xFIP, but 10.1% of his flyballs are leaving the park, which isn't a great sign moving to Philly's small park.

On the bright side, he's striking out hitters at a 8.06/9 rate and none of his stats are that out of line with his career norm, so he should be pretty good for the price the Phillies are now paying.

There's 15 other pitchers I'd take over Oswalt. Lee and Doc? not many.

I supported the Lee trade and still do. I'd much rather have Halladay-Hamels-Oswalt than Lee-Hamels-Happ. Plus, keeping Lee wouldn't have done much to make the Phillies hit any more in the last two months than they did -- you can see what a lack of run support does just by looking at Halladay so far this year. Hamels has gotten some pretty terrible offense, too.

The Phillies straight up swindled the Astros in this deal. Ed Wade has a really good track record for the team now that he's not the GM.

Amaro is now saying the #1 issue with keeping Cliff Lee was the ability to retain an ace passed the end of 2010. While I feel like they could have gotten more for him (time will tell) I can understand that logic.
