Makes you think what teams philosophies are now and how they've changed in the last 40 years. How is it that pitch counts, innings pitched, and complete games are all so far down and yet injuries are up? It has to have something do with pitchers not being used to throwing so many innings and tiring quicker. I think Nolan Ryan has a book or something out about this very issue and he's trying to incorporate his philosophies in the Ranger organization starting with the lowest ranks and up. Maybe he's just a freak but i have no idea how he pitched 27 years throwing as hard as he did.

He's quite good (as is Strasburg) but they really had him doing too much too soon. Shame, but he's young enough to recover.
What they're doing with Hellickson has to do with money.

If Stras was in AAA, he'd still be pitching. Him being in MLB really has nothing to do with it, I don't understand people talking about "rushing him", as if in the minors you don't throw anything.

And it's TJ. Who cares about TJ? I mean, this is a "it sucks for the nats he'll miss a year", not "oh god his career is over." The media attention and reaction of people is just amazing to me lol

When he fucks up his shoulder, then you can worry.

1st pitch of the game from Hanson goes for a homer.

Edit: 1st 2 batters of the game homer.

gg Tommy. Back to back homers to start the game. I swear to god, it seems like every freaking start of Tommy's I see, he's giving up 1-2 runs in the first couple innings. I don't give a shit if he has a 2.14 ERA or whatever over his last 6+ starts, and pitches lights out.. he still sucks ASS in the first two innings.

    Last 9 starts for Hanson:

    0-4 with a 2.23 era

    I'd blame our offense.

It doesn't help that after two innings in most starts, he's saying to the offense "Sorry guys. Instead of it being 0-0 with no pressure on you guys whatsoever, it's gonna be 1/2-0, so you always have to come from behind. HAVE FUN!"

Not getting into this argument again, but yeah, it sucks to give up runs early. But the bottom line is major league hitters are expected to perform whether they are behind a few runs or not.

I'm also gonna go with Nolan Ryan just being a freak.

Putting up another stellar performance tonight, too. Kid's just WAY too fucking inconsistent. Sorry.

And considering the only guys who have been consistent on this staff are a rookie in Mike Minor and Tim Hudson... the Bravos have major issues. Oh, Jurrjens too when he's at home. They don't have a 'randomly score 8 runs a night' sort of offense to protect terrible pitching.

Maybe we need to lose 9 in a row again so we can go on a tear.

Oh and Minor was sent down to make room for a reliever for this weekend series. He'll be back to make his next start so no worries there.

I don't know what else the Nats could have done, they didn't bring him up right away and they kept him on a strict pitch/innings count. Sometimes, this shit happens. Plenty of major leaguers come back strong from TJS though, so it's not like the kid is doomed.
Tim Kurkjian mentioned on SC this morning that, from what the Nats skipper told him, it's entirely possible Strasburg tore his UCL just on that one pitch. A lot of the speculation that Strasburg was overworked has been shot down by most critics. I think he was at 123 IP, minors and majors combined, out of the 150 or 160 the Nats had expected him to pitch by the end of the year. And besides all that, he was dominant in the minors nearly every single start they put him out there. How long did people expect them to let him fester there?

How well are things going for the Phillies? 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th in a 2-2 count Brad Lidge balks in the tying run. FFFFFFFFFFFFF.

Friend was at the game bitching too. HOW DO YOU POSSIBLY BALK WITH THE BASES LOADED? What runners are you checking??? And on top of that, how do you miss your spot by a foot with an 0-2 count and 2 outs and hit a guy??? Call was a high fastball. I know he wasn't trying to, but even kids in the little league world series know that you don't throw inside with runners on and an 0-2 count in a save situation. For the 12 mil a year Lidge is getting, he shouldn't be missing spots that badly.

That was before the series with Tampa started. Seems that Papelbon isn't the only one on the team that doesn't know how to finish.

    Ugh I should have spent extra on mlb.tv premium to pick between home and away broadcasts. These Rays announcers are putting me back to sleep -_-;
