Not bad for a guy in his 80's. The current reactionary attitude within Phillies fans is pure rancid bile right now. The bottom line seems to be: OMG TRADE UTLEY HE SUCKS SO BAD AND CAN'T EVEN CATCH BALLS. It's really annoying to read respected Philadelphia baseball writers jumping on the bandwagon in spite of overwhelming evidence that supports Utley as one of the elite 2B in the game, even on defense. One writer even suggested that Philadelphia fans give Rollins and Howard a hard time and not Utley because he's a white guy. It's going to be a long off-season.

I've been reading Phillies blogs and message boards all night and my head is about to explode from the amount of stupidity thats been spewed. Trade Utley,then move Polanco to 2B and sign (massively overpay) Beltre to a long term deal /head asplode. Also most of these people seem to think the rest of MLB is beating down Ruben's door to get Ibanez and his mammoth $12 mil contract for this season. I mean Jesus fucking Christ man.

Not gonna happen -- he may love the city, but we have much bigger concerns right now than getting top-tier starting pitching. Here's what I'd like to see happen in Philly:

- Platoon Ibañez with Francisco, shitty contracts be damned.
- Move Blanton & Victorino, use their salaries to sign Jayson to a 2-3 year contract.
- Put Werth in CF, Domonic Brown in RF.
- Cut/trade/murder Danys Baez & JC Romero, pick some some reliable relief arms for cheap (including some LHPs...our entire pitching staff had 3 lefties total)
- Pick up a decent #4/5 starter, or bring up Worley/Zagurski. Kendrick has some flashes of brilliance, no need to drop him just yet.

Of course, I doubt much or any of this is bound to happen, but we have way better places to spend our money than on getting Cliff Lee back.

I was gonna wait till the offseason thread for this, but might as well give my opinion since you mentioned it.

- Resigning Werth would be nice but its not gonna happen

- Platoon Ibanez with John Mayberry Jr. in LF. There's no way in hell anyone will take Ibanez, and Francisco will probably get 1.5-2 mil in arbitration, which is way too much for a replacement player so let him go. Mayberry is way cheaper, a similar player, and under club control.

- I like Blanton as a #4 guy, but he is getting #2 money so I'd definitely try and move him, but I doubt there will be any takers. If we do manage to trade him I'd sign a cheap #4 quality guy or reclamation project.

- Victorino is really our only tradeable position player, but I would only trade him if it somehow allowed us to keep Werth (who I believe is gone no matter what).

- We already declined Romero's option, and he will be replaced by Bastardo, which is fine to me. Try to get another LOOGY that isn't too pricy, even if it means bringing Romero back on the cheap. Cut Baez and eat the loss, he's worthless.

- Non tender Kendrick because he's not worth the 2 mil he'll get in arbitration. Try to bring him back for around 1 mil and stick him in the pen as the long reliever to replace Durbin. Make Worley the 5th starter and see what he can do.

- Bring back Contreras, hopefully for around 2 mil or less. Say goodbye to Durbin and send Herndon down to AAA to learn how to throw strikes.

- Start Domonic Brown in RF and leave him there. He'll undoubtedly have some growing pains but he has enough talent to get over them. Sign a cheapish RH bat with some pop for the OF to platoon with him (and Ibanez).

- Tell Ryan Howard to end the whole "contact hitter" experiment he tried this year and just go back to mashing the fuck out of the ball.

- BRING BACK CLIFF LEE!!!!!! (yeah not gonna happen)
