It's proof that having excellent velocity isn't what makes or breaks a pitcher. The guy is 47, in 2004 he was 41. He's also playing for a very good ball club. There's no way Santana is playing at 47 years old. Here's a couple more examples of pitchers with low velocity that have been very successful. Mike Mussina and Andy Petite.

Moose and Pettitte didn't lose velocity in their early 30's. Missing. The. Point.

k/9 is important yes, but look at Andy Petite, his k/9 has always been in the 5 and 6 range except for one fluke year with the Astros. He's successful right?

I never said K/9 was the determining factor in whether a pitcher is successful or not, but when a power pitcher loses velocity and a diminished ability (in a league where the pitcher hits, no-less) to strike people out, its a big fucking concern. Pettitte is a ground-ball pitcher so the need to have a high K/9 people isn't as great.

As was Burnett and they signed him. His salary in 2009 was 16.5 million, Santana's in 2009 was 18.9 million. Difference of 2.4 million, have I made my point?

They had a gaping hole at 1B, Tex was the perfect fit and premium offensive talent is easier to sign to large contracts because there's less risk involved. I know that Santana used to be a power pitcher but I was under the assumption that he tended to produce ground balls more than fly balls. Maybe it was somewhere I read, but you're right, I'm wrong in suggesting that he's going to perform at the same level with a loss in velocity if he's not a groundball pitcher.

How many more chances does Kyle Kendrick get? This is nothing like he was in Spring Training and it's not like he's giving up weak groundball hits. At least there would be a roster spot free for David Herndon if Kendrick keeps getting rocked.

Figgy was great, his single and double had to be one of the best parts of the game with everyone laughing their asses off.

Wasn't trying to suggest having Figgy be a starter. Don't think I want Contreras in the rotation either, he was pretty damn good in his few outings from the pen. Just need to hope that Kendrick pitches like he did in Spring or Blanton gets back and is healthy.

I honestly love picking up Pedro again...if he would take it out of his contract that he won't pitch out of the bullpen. For the money the Phillies paid for him he was worth it. Even if the Yankees are his daddy. The offense isn't going to be able to pick Kendrick up when the Phils start playing big market teams with good pitching staffs. Blanton needs to get healthy quick.

I really don't see the Phils signing Pedro unless Moyer gets hurt again or pitches like shit. They supposedly only have a few million set aside for the trade deadline, and I have a feeling they will be looking for bullpen help (closer) more than a 5th starter by then.

As for Kendrick, he looks scared shitless on the mound. If he can find his balls and stop leaving so many pitches over the middle of the plate he'll be fine.

Nick Johnson of the Yankees came out to the same song. He said it was for his 4 year old daughter and got considerable press (I don't know why) here in NY. I wonder if Troy did it for a similiar reason?
